Why We Shouldn't Idolize the Celebrities Who Only Care About Themselves
Do you have any idol that you can’t seem to like? Recently, the case of Lisa BP has reignited an ongoing debate on whether or not we should continue to idolize individuals who are only concerned with their fame and image.
My Initial Admiration
In the early days, I admired and loved Lisa BP a lot. However, a series of recent revelations has changed my opinion. While I still like her a little, I no longer admire her due to a series of questionable actions and decisions.
Personal Struggles
Firstly, Lisa's dedication to being a cat person is admirable. But then she brought home a Doberman, a breed known to be the arch-nemesis of cats. The cats were clearly traumatised by this choice.
Secondly, as a Thai person who identifies as Buddhist and is from a predominantly Buddhist country, her public statements and actions might draw some scrutiny. Buddhists tend to promote peaceful coexistence and non-violence, so it is questionable if her behavior aligns with these ideals.
The Current Slice of Life
Post her relationship with a wealthy playboy, she chose to perform at a French cabaret, a strip club known for its luxurious and adult-themed entertainment. Considering her petite stature and unconventional body shape, this decision seems out of place for a typical entertainer.
These actions, among others, have led me to question why we place idols on such high pedestals. Here are the key points:
Idolization: A Misguided Phenomenon
Do you expect grown, educated individuals to idolize some average self-centered people who appear on TV? An idol is someone deserving of that title, not just a celebrity. An idol is someone who has made significant contributions to the greater good of humanity, such as finding a cure for cancer or risking one’s life to save others. Celebrities are paid to entertain, and fans should not feel compelled to turn them into more than they are physically capable of being.
Idols, by definition, should be those who have outstanding achievements and who have made sacrifices for those in need. They should be heroes, not just performers on a screen. It's concerning when the world idolizes individuals like Lisa, who is more focused on her image and lifestyle than doing something meaningful for humanity.
The Fan-Entertainer Relationship
It's paradoxical to see how fans provide the financial means for celebrities to live lavish lives, only to be disappointed when those same celebrities do not reciprocate with gratitude or acknowledgment. Fans often feel that their idols are exploiting their admiration for personal gain, yet this is rarely acknowledged or expressed.
Imagine if you wrote to any famous person, detailing your struggles. Chances are, they would neither read nor respond. Even when they do, it's usually a scripted message with no sincerity. This highlights the disconnect and insincerity of celebrity fan relationships.
Questions on Fan Behavior
Are fans really supposed to idolize people they've never met personally and have only seen on TV? This level of infatuation is not healthy or realistic. While some fans maintain their idols at a distance, others go to extreme lengths. For every fan who writes fanfiction, there are others who create fake profiles and stalk their idols or even harass other fans who share the same idol. This toxic behavior not only damages the mental health of the individuals involved but also drives potential fans away.
Their behavior is a testament to the problematic nature of modern fandoms, where personal boundaries are often blurred, leading to a culture of admiration and obsessive behavior that can be harmful not only to the individuals involved but also to the fans themselves.
A Call for Change
In conclusion, it is high time to rethink our approach to idolization. Instead of placing our admiration on celebrities, we should focus on real-life heroes and charity workers. These individuals, regardless of their background or profession, are doing more to make a difference in the world.
Let's not idealize fame and fortune but instead recognize and support those who truly make a positive impact on society. It's time for a healthier, more balanced approach to entertainment and celebrity worship.
