Why PC Gamers Crave Console-Exclusive Games and the Unfairness of Platform Exclusivity
PC gamers often desire games that are exclusive to consoles, driven by a mix of curiosity, social factors, and the allure of unique gaming experiences. In this article, we will examine the reasons behind this fascination and explore the arguments against platform exclusivity, emphasizing why all gamers should be able to experience games on their preferred platform.
Game Quality and Innovation
Console-exclusive titles frequently stand out due to high production values and innovative gameplay mechanics that set them apart from average PC offerings. Gamers are drawn to the unparalleled artistry and creativity these games offer. Titles like God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man exemplify the level of craftsmanship that console exclusives can provide.
Cultural Impact
Some exclusive games become cultural phenomena, generating discussions and communities around them. Gamers may want to experience these titles to engage with the wider gaming community. For example, the Minecraft and Animal Crossing franchises have fostered large player bases and vibrant online communities.
Variety of Experience
Console exclusives often bring fresh gameplay experiences that differ from typical PC games. PC gamers seeking a change in style or a new perspective may be motivated to explore these titles. Games like Final Fantasy VII Remake and The Last of Us Part II offer unique storytelling and graphics that are hard to replicate on PC.
Nostalgia and Brand Loyalty
Many gamers have strong ties to specific franchises or brands that are exclusive to consoles. This nostalgia can drive a desire to experience those games, even if they primarily play on PC. Titles like Resident Evil 7 and Street Fighter hold a special place in many hearts because of their console histories.
Social Interaction
Some gamers may have friends who play on consoles and wish to share experiences or play together, which can motivate them to seek out console-exclusive games. Playing Call of Duty, Fortnite, or Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege with friends on consoles can create a more immersive social experience.
Potential Future Releases
Exclusive games may eventually make their way to PC, and gamers may want to be familiar with the story or gameplay in anticipation of a future release. Titles like GTA V going to PC after an initial console release can be exciting for those who want to complete the experience across platforms.
Cross-Platform Play
With the growing trend of cross-platform functionality, some PC gamers desire to experience exclusive titles to play with friends on consoles, broadening their gaming options. This inclusivity enhances the overall gaming community.
The Problem with Exclusivity
Promoting platform exclusivity as a good thing is like saying: 'We need to own a Sony Blu-Ray Player a Disney DVD/Blu-Ray player etc. to watch our Sony Disney etc. movies or needing to own an iPhone to call other iPhones, needing an Android to talk to Android users etc.' The issue with exclusives is when there is no reason they can't be played on a better platform. We all know the Xbox One is slightly weaker than the PS4; however, neither of these machines can hold a candle to a gaming PC. Either one of my CPU and GPU costs more than the stock console systems.
First and foremost, we are gamers. Our hobby should not be limited. All games are made on PC, in the first place, then optimized for consoles. It doesn't make sense why they can't be exported to PC with reworked controls for a more dynamic and modifiable experience. Exclusive games are more like a Monopoly/Cartel on our hobby, limiting our freedom and enjoyment. I'm fine with 'time-limited releases' like GTA V going to Xbox One/PS4 first, then to PC.
PC Gamers Want Console Games on Their Preferred Platform
When I've got a Tesla/Ferrari/Lexus/Luxury Vehicle and you're driving an Accord, and you're the only one allowed to race on this one track because it's a Honda Accord only track, you’re wondering why I want to drive my nicer vehicle on that track instead of buying an Accord so I can drive on this one exclusive Honda Accord track. However, if I did this, I wouldn't experience the track in my expensive car, I'd have to drive an average one – therefore, my joy in the drive wouldn't be as amazing as it might have been in my luxury vehicle.
See the issue, I've got this amazing machine and monitor, and you're telling me that the only way I should be able to play is to buy a generic PC console that isn't as capable, not be able to see all the amazing effects they could enable in the game because of how powerful my machine is. Perhaps, I am perhaps a demanding entitled jerk for wanting it, but ultimately, the joy of gaming should not come with limitations.
Conclusion
The desire for console-exclusive games among PC gamers stems from a mix of curiosity, social factors, and the appeal of unique gaming experiences. Exclusivity should not be a barrier to enjoyment. ALL gamers should be able to experience games on their preferred platform, regardless of the system they own.
