Why I Don't Like Chicago: Climate, Infrastructure, and More

Living in, or visiting, a city like Chicago can be an enriching experience, but as with any city, there are aspects that may not appeal to everyone. In this article, I'll delve into some of the reasons why I don't particularly enjoy staying in Chicago, focusing on its climate, public infrastructure, and other lingering issues.

Climate and Weather

Climate Suffering: One of the most significant reasons for my dislike of Chicago is the climate. Summer humidity can make a balmy 80 degrees feel like a suffocating 100 degrees. The city experiences extreme fluctuations, with stiflingly hot and humid summers, wet and windy springs, and horrors of brutal winters. This contrast with my hometown in LA, where nearly every day is beautiful, is stark.

During my last visit in the summer of 2022, the high temperatures and humidity made outdoor activities unpleasant. The moisture lingers, and the city's historic architecture struggles to provide adequate protection from the heat. Moreover, the winters are harsh and unpredictable, which I find challenging to endure.

City Infrastructure and Public Transportation

Public Transportation Frustrations: While Chicago has a robust public transit network, including the iconic Ventra app, the reality is that it's often unreliable. The Ventra app, which is supposed to streamline rides, frequently malfunctions, and when it does, relying on Ventra vending machines which often don't work, is frustrating. This adds an extra layer of stress to my already weary commute.

The city's famous potholes also take a toll, especially during the winter months. The frequent freeze-thaw cycles lead to damage to streets and roads, making driving and walking in certain areas uncomfortable and at times dangerous. This not only impacts day-to-day commuting but also adds to the general wear and tear on the city infrastructure.

Limited Culinary Options

Culinary Disappointment: While Chicago boasts a vibrant food scene with diverse offerings, one specific dish—chicken fried steak—has left me unimpressed. Despite my efforts to find a satisfactory plate, I haven't yet had a truly delicious one. This is in stark contrast to the city's other culinary delights, such as deep-dish pizza and beef tacos, which definitely live up to their reputation.

Sadly, the food experiences aren't always pleasant. The smoke from cigarettes and marijuana cloying the air in train cars, mixed with the scent of urine, is a stark reminder of the underlying social and economic issues facing the city. These elements contribute to a less-than-ideal overall atmosphere, detracting from the charm and appeal that Chicago could offer.

Positive Aspects of Chicago

Despite the Challenges: It's important to note that amidst these challenges, Chicago does offer several positive attributes. The city is filled with fantastic music scenes, vibrant art, and impressive museums and cultural institutions. The Loop and other city centers are clean and modern, and there's a superb public transit network that allows for easy exploration of the city.

Furthermore, Chicago's cultural landscape, including its public transportation, is a beacon of progress and innovation. Despite the current political and economic conditions, the city still manages to attract top-notch educational institutions and healthcare providers, such as the renowned universities and hospitals.

Conclusion

While Chicago is a city rich in history, culture, and opportunities, my time there has been marked by its challenges. Climate extremes, unreliable public infrastructure, and limited culinary options are just a few reasons why I don't particularly enjoy Chicago. However, the city's positive attributes continue to shine through, making it a highly valuable and vibrant metropolis that continually attracts new residents and visitors alike.
