especially the newer stuff. I'm not used to the chaos of jazz music so it stressed me out at first. The complex soundscapes and improvisational elements can be overwhelming, especially for those who are more accustomed to the structured sounds of traditional hip-hop.

I Didn't Appreciate All the Word Play

It took a lot of listening to his stuff for me to start picking up on the nuances of his lyrics. His raps are really dense, and to appreciate them, I have to pay a lot of attention. For example, in the iconic "Backseat Freestyle," there are layers of meaning that require close analysis:

"All my life I want money and power, Respect my mind or die from lead shower, I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel tower, So I can fuck the world for 72 hours."

Some things I see:

The "money and power // respect" zeugma-esque pivot The way that 'lead' could either mean bullets or potentially his lyrics, the 'lead' words written out on paper "Fuck the world" as an expression of dominance/pleasure-vampirism rather than one of anger. The Christianity connections via "praying" for a big dick and 72 hours Jesus remains dead 3 days before the resurrection. There's this really interesting irony here where his clearly-not-Christian braggadocio is steeped in Christian themes. What is Kendrick getting at here?" All of Kendrick Lamar's lyrics are like this—super dense and requiring intense attention to pick up what's going on.

My initial experiences with Kendrick Lamar were such that I appreciated neither the musical style nor how much was going on, so I thought it was pretty boring.
