Why Certain Musicians or Bands Bear the Brunt of My Dislike
Music is a deeply personal art form, often evoking a wide range of emotions encompassing joy, nostalgia, and even strong distaste. In this article, we'll explore why certain musicians or bands have earned a place at the top of my list of least favorites, sparking a discussion about the role of personal taste and critical reception in shaping opinions.
When it comes to Vic Mensa, for instance, there are several reasons why I may not enjoy his music. Vic Mensa's $ of 2019 is a prime example of critically acclaimed but personally underwhelming work. While the media tends to overlook some of his weaker projects, citing his conscious rap style as a saving grace, I have maintained a consistent dislike for his music and lyrical content. Although he is a solid lyricist, the hype surrounding his work does not resonate with my tastes.
Sam Smith and Michael Jackson
My distaste for Sam Smith is a product of his controversial statement about Michael Jackson. It's a tragic fact that Michael Jackson’s untimely death still engenders controversy and division. However, Sam Smith’s statement, while his intentions may be one thing, has left a lasting negative impact on me.
Turning our attention to Cardi B, the rapper's actions and behavior have also dampened my enthusiasm for her music. Her treatment of makeup artists and other team members, as well as the troubling account of criminal charges she faced, have all contributed to why Cardi B has not been a favorite of mine. Such incidents highlight the often harsh price of superstardom and the need for greater responsibility and maturity.
The Early Van Halen and AC/DC
Van Halen, particularly during their early years, received mixed reviews from me, with the incessant screaming and grunting of David Lee Roth's vocals being a key reason for my dislike. While I appreciated some of the creative output during this period, the vocal style was a major hurdle for me. In contrast, the tenure of Sammy Hagar seems more palatable, as I found the band's music more engaging during those years.
A parallel can be drawn with AC/DC, where the band went from late 80s and 90s powerhouses to a more formulaic and repetitive sound. While I initially purchased their early albums, it's undeniable that the band's musical repertoire became less impressive and more formulaic over time.
Personal Dislike for Specific Bands and Vocalists
When it comes to Rush, while the band's music is widely acclaimed, I have a distinct personal aversion to Geddy Lee's voice. The descriptions of their "hair" band peers from the 80s further emphasize my point that vocal abilities can be a significant factor in personal dislike. Sometimes, despite talented musicianship and quality songs, certain vocalists can still turn me off.
Finding myself unable to tolerate certain vocal styles, even within well-respected bands, such as Rush, is something that befuddles me. This aversion does not detract from the fact that AC/DC, through Rob Halford, has vocalists whose voices I find easier to appreciate. This is a testament to how subjective personal taste can be.
This discussion is about more than just personal preferences; it touches on the influence of media and societal attitudes on our views of artists. Whether it's Vic Mensa's conscious rap style, Sam Smith’s controversial statements, or Rush's vocalists, each musician or band is a reflection of their unique world and experiences. In the end, it's about understanding and acknowledging the myriad factors that contribute to our tastes and opinions.
