What to Expect at Burning Man When You Don’t Know Much About It

My very first experience at Burning Man was a delightful and eye-opening journey that shrouded me in a good kind of soul-shattering joy. I was fortunate enough to go with a friend who kept me in the dark about many of the specifics. This kept the experience a mystery and added to the excitement. If you go in with minimal knowledge, you can fully appreciate the magic of the event. However, it is entirely possible to know too much before you go, but there is so much you simply can’t know until you're there...

Fun as long as you have the basic necessities

My very first year, I met this wonderfully enthusiastic German exchange student who had no idea what was ahead of her until her host family suggested she come along. She ended up having the time of her life. This is a common sentiment; you won’t truly understand what Burning Man is like until you’re actually there.

It is not just a festival but a unique journey into the Nevada desert. The playa, the principal location for Burning Man, is essentially a nearly flat dry lake bed covered in corrosive alkali dust. It is unlike any other camping experience you can have elsewhere. It is a desolate place, with no life of any kind. If you see a bug, it likely traveled to the playa via the wind or came with a vehicle, and everything living there will quickly perish. There are no natural decomposers, and this fact has been witnessed firsthand, such as when a badger was butchered in front of my camp 5 years ago. The remains were left on a newspaper on a car’s hood, and it never stank; it simply dried out.

Burning Man's Environment

Although I have yet to make my way to the playa, I am quite familiar with the surrounding terrain. In short, as long as you bring food, water, and somewhere to sleep, you will have a great time. The experience is similar to that of a Kampgrounds of America (KOA) camping trip, and it is nothing like camping in the Nevada high desert without Burning Man.

Be prepared for extreme temperatures and a relatively thin atmosphere, as the playa sits at about 4000 feet above sea level, and the sun protection is absolute must. Bring more sunscreen than you think necessary, as the sun's rays are relentless. These precautions will ensure that you fully enjoy the experience without any discomfort.

Going to Burning Man without a detailed understanding of the event can be quite the adventure. It's a place where new discoveries and realizations can lead to profound changes in perspective. So, if you're planning to attend Burning Man, embrace the mystery and enjoy the journey of discovery.
