Imagine encountering a six-foot-tall white rabbit sitting on a wall, waving at cars. Initially, it might seem surreal, especially since it happens on the 1st of each month; it no longer strikes as odd. In fact, the rabbit even has its own Instagram account. Instances like these remind us that the line between reality and fiction sometimes blurs
Large Birds and Eagle Terrorizing Windshields
Other strange encounters include a large bird flying toward the front windshield, obscuring the view with its wings fully spread. The feeling of being preyed upon by a bird is rather disconcerting. I recall two instances: an eagle in Virginia and a turkey vulture in Texas. These intruders in the sky seem to challenge the concept of who truly owns the road.
Angled Water Tower
A strange sight encountered on a road in Texas was a water tower tilted at an angle, suggesting it might be about to topple. Between fifteen and twenty years ago, while driving north on US 101, approaching San Jose, I witnessed a fireball dropping straight down for about five seconds and exploding. Although the phenomenon seemed spectacular, I couldn’t find any mention of it in the local news or newspapers. The stories continue with the almost fictional encounter involving a small white Honda and a pet llama. A particularly unusual and unexpected encounter was seeing a livestock trailer loaded not with animals but with human beings. I witnessed a scenario where a livestock trailer was filled with people, and then shortly after, a horse trailer was nearly crammed with people. This was a common tactic to avoid paying entrance fees to a show ground, but it quickly became a liability once event organizers started checking horseboxes and trailers.
Free Pebbles and a Living Willow Tree
Driving through rural landscapes often involves the unlikeliest of opportunities. I once responded to a promotional offer to collect two tonnes of free pebbles, which were needed to address drainage issues on my paddock. To my surprise, the lady also had a fully grown willow tree that she offered to share if we could collect it within the next day.
