Unveiling the Truth in the Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and Taylor Swift Controversy

Back in 2008, I had no idea who Kanye West was, but I was glued to the screen during the MTV Video Music Awards as Taylor Swift performed. When Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech, grabbing her microphone and claiming the performance was for him, his actions were despicable. He didn't apologize until days later, when Taylor was asked in an interview. From that moment, my opinion of Kanye West was cemented. His lack of accountability and respect for others made it clear he was not someone I admired.

Flashforward to 2011 when Kanye’s song "Famous" dropped. Taylor Swift's statement that she didn’t know she was going to be called a "bitch" and that Kanye never played her the entire song was striking. Knowing Kanye West and the Kardashians’ penchant for making controversial statements to gain attention, I was not surprised that she was wronged. I was convinced that whatever they said about this issue was bound to be a lie.

Four years later, in 2015, Kim Kardashian continued to lie about the issue, even going so far as to deny public statements that Taylor Swift had made. For example, on Twitter, Kim claimed that Taylor Swift used a leaked phone call footage to selfishly bring attention to herself amid a global health crisis. However, Taylor responded on Instagram, saying the issue was not relevant in the current scenario and urged people to focus on what truly mattered.

My opinion of both Kanye West and Kim Kardashian remains unchanged. I never believed that Taylor Swift was okay with Kanye's actions.

As both celebrities continue to speak about themselves as brands, the controversy serves to highlight what some might call a "celebrity conspiracy theory": perhaps they once had a lovers' spat. The leaked phone call was “juicy,” but far from a “bombshell.” However, Kim's insistence on the falsehood of the situation, even after six years, further taints her credibility.

I do appreciate the novelty of seeing Kanye and Taylor talk about themselves as brands and am more convinced than ever about my celebrity conspiracy theory. My stance is that they were potentially connected, but that's not the central issue at hand. Kanye and Taylor are both talented artists and, in many ways, seem to share similar qualities.

However, Taylor needs to let this matter go. She needs to focus on what truly matters in her career and her life. It's refreshing to see Kesha take a different approach, dedicating time to trashing her rapist, Dr. Luke, rather than continuing to attack Kanye West.
