In this article, I share some of the best musical plays I have ever attended, from classic Broadway shows to smaller community theatre performances.
1. Avenue Q - Local Community Theatre
One of the most memorable performances I've seen, Avenue Q, continues to stand out. Performed at my local community theatre, this show captivated me from the opening scene. Laughter filled the auditorium by intermission, and the combination of humor and emotion made it a performance that I'll never forget. The music is simply excellent, and the performances brought the characters to life in a unique and humorous way.
2. Hamilton
Visiting Hamilton was a truly extraordinary experience. Although the soundtrack provided amazing music, it couldn't compare to the live performance. The Hamilton experience was unlike any other, and I still highly recommend anyone to go see it if they have the chance. I still fondly remember the exhilarating energy of this innovative musical, and I cannot wait to catch another performance. It's a show that brings together history, rap, and a powerful narrative in a way that is both captivating and educational.
3. Miss Saigon - Equity Version
Miss Saigon, the true classic, remains one of my favorite shows. Watching the Equity version at a professional theatre brought me to tears with its powerful and emotional story. The music is unforgettable, and the production values are top-notch. It tells a timeless tale of love, war, and the human condition, making it a must-see for anyone who appreciates musical theatre.
4. Oliver! - Broadway Experience
Oliver! was more than just a show; it was a defining moment in my life. My father, an Air Force officer stationed in France, took his family to New York before we moved to France. We saw Oliver! and it became a cherished memory. The show was simply wonderful, and I have since appeared in the production several times at community theatres. The combination of music, acting, and storytelling in Oliver! is truly remarkable and leaves a lasting impression.
5. Spitfire Grill - University Theatre
Spitfire Grill is a hidden gem in the world of theatre. This little show found its way onto my radar at my local college, and since then, it has become a must-see for any theatre enthusiast. Friends attended multiple performances, which further emphasizes its charm and quality. Don't miss the opportunity to see this play at universities and colleges in your area. It's a fantastic way to experience live theatre and discover new up-and-coming performers.
6. Fiddler on the Roof - Original Tevye in Toronto
One of the most enchanting shows I've ever seen, Fiddler on the Roof, performed by the original Tevye, Zero Mostel, in Toronto, was pure magic. The production was so powerful and inspiring, it's a performance that stays with you long after the curtain falls. The music and storytelling are masterpieces, making it a must-see for any lover of musical theatre.
7. Secret Garden and Aspects of Love
The musical Secret Garden is a true visual and musical feast. The highlights include the stunning performance of "Aspects of Love" by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which is often overlooked but one of my favorites. Les Misérables is a masterpiece, with its profoundly emotional story and memorable songs. Watching it in French only added to the beauty and complexity of the production.
8. Tommy - Theatre Version
In the early 90s, I had the privilege of seeing the original production of The Who's rock opera Tommy at the La Jolla Playhouse in California. Pete Townshend adapted and produced the stage version, and it was a highly enjoyable and well-executed performance. Although there were no big-name actors, the production made excellent use of the album's songs and provided an excellent adaptation of the story. The show was simply fantastic, and even better, it was a faithful tribute to one of my favorite bands.
9. Lion King and Jesus Christ Superstar
Wrapping up my top musical plays, two others stand out particularly: The Lion King and Jesus Christ Superstar. Both are memorable and moving shows. The Lion King is a stunning visual and auditory experience, while Jesus Christ Superstar is a powerful and emotional retelling of a classic biblical story. Both have made indelible impressions on me, and I still cherish the memories of these performances.
