The Preference Between Girl and Boy K-pop Groups: A Personal Journey

The Preference Between Girl and Boy K-pop Groups: A Personal Journey

As someone who is deeply immersed in the K-pop scene, I often find myself contemplating a question that has been at the heart of my fandom: do I stan more girl or boy K-pop groups?

My Stan Situation

Currently, I actively follow more boy groups. I can count 13 boy groups I stan, including a few that are about to debut. However, my desire to stan girl groups has grown, and I am about to stan at least one more. My current number of girl groups is three, soon to expand to four, with a particular interest in Washermin Le Ssk. While I still love girl groups, there's something that draws me more to boy groups.

The Unspoken Attraction

Boy groups seem to exude a different vibe that captivates me. This allure isn't easy to pinpoint, but it's something that makes them stand out for me. I often contrast this attraction to the more studious approach I take in understanding girl groups' choreography. In reality, I understand the complexities and techniques involved in both male and female performance, but there’s an underlying factor that inclines me toward boy groups.

Choreography and Fandom Dynamics

Interestingly, I have a greater understanding of girl group choreographies than boy groups. This doesn't mean I'm better as a fan, but it highlights my personal interest and engagement. However, I do find that the stans of some boy groups can be a bit embarrassing, which isn't to say that all are so – it's more about the ones that do. Furthermore, it's not just boy stans that I find embarrassing; I also recall feeling a sense of injustice when I saw a compilation of 'female idols being rude'. The reality turned out to be different: when male idols dared to speak back, they were called 'savage', whereas female idols received similar criticisms for their behavior.

A Personal Stand

Despite all this, I made a promise to myself to only stan girl groups. However, fate (or perhaps, sheer curiosity) led me to break my own promise when I discovered TXT and ENHYPEN. But even then, my primary preference remains for girl groups. This unique journey highlights a complex interaction of personal preference and societal norms.

Perfection in Male Idols
Male idols are often seen as flawless in every aspect: their style, attitude, behavior, passion, hard work, dance, vocals, raps, dressing sense, and stage presence. The perfectionism extended to them sometimes borders on the unrealistic, and it is this that often makes them stand out to me in a different light compared to my usual selection of girl groups.

A Preference Explained

There's no denying that I prefer girl groups overall. Particularly, I am a huge fan of SNSD and Red Velvet. The dynamics, performances, and behind-the-scenes stories of these groups are what keep me captivated. While I understand and respect both male and female idols for their contributions, my heart remains steadfast with the girl groups.

Do I stan more boy or girl K-pop groups? The answer to that question isn’t simple, and it doesn't have a straightforward binary. Both genders have their unique charm and appeal, and my journey as a fan reflects a balance of admiration and preference that evolves as my love for K-pop grows.
