The Night I Felt a Presence: A Haunting Journey to the Unseen
As the clock ticked to 2:03 AM, signaling the end of another busy day, my to-do list finally clicked into place. With a deep sigh of relief, I decided to reward myself with a gentle pat on the back, feeling satisfied after ticking off the last I began to gather my belongings, the peaceful atmosphere was suddenly shattered by a soft call from my mother.
‘Why was she awake at this hour?’I wondered, but before I could seek her in the darkness, I heard her voice again, this time with a hint of urgency. 'Sakhi, I’m stuck in the bathroom. Please help.'
It wasn’t the first time she found herself in difficulty; the bathroom had become a recurring place of tension between us. With a heavy sigh, I headed towards the bathroom to rescue her. However, as I approached, I noticed an unusual detail - the balcony gate was slightly open, and my instincts drove me to close it immediately before entering.
The bathroom door was unlocked, and as I pushed it open, it quickly shut behind me. The absence of any other sounds filled me with unease. The faucet was slightly ajar, so I turned it off. But just as the water stopped, the bathroom door closed on its own, locking me in. Panic set in. ‘What if my mum was just playing a prank on me? Maa and Baba were out of town. How did she manage to get into the bathroom?’I pondered, gulping down my dry throat.
With every heartbeat quickening, I reached for the door handle with trembling hands, and then hesitated. I glanced over to the slightly open balcony door, which had naturally become my next point of concern. The possibility of an unseen presence was daunting, but my sense of duty compelled me to address it. I decided to grab a flower vase as a makeshift weapon and approached the balcony door with caution. Once outside, the surroundings were eerily quiet, and despite my initial fear, I couldn't detect anything suspicious.
My eyes darted towards the construction site of a house, which had been abandoned by its owners the previous month. Through the gap in the construction, I noticed something unusual. Two bright yellow eyes... staring at me. ‘It was a creature, right in front of my house!'My heart pounded as I slammed the balcony door closed. The sound of something colliding with the gate only added to the tension.
With trembling feet, I began to make my way back to my room, thinking about the surreal scene. Suddenly, I heard my mother's voice over the phone again. 'Sweety, we’ll be late. Sleep well. Love you.' I hesitated, my grip on the phone tight. Then, the message was gone, and in its place was the sound of my mother’s voice as if she were beside me. I screamed, a primal sound escaping my throat. It was almost as if the presence I felt slipped away.
‘I was dreaming, wasn’t I?’,I told myself as I jolted awake.I glanced around, finding myself on my desk, the time showing 2:02 AM. A deep breath of relief escaped me as I realized it was just a nightmare. I took a sip of water and set my resolve to get a proper sleep, taking solace in the reassurance that it was all a figment of my imagination.
Finally, the thought of my mother’s message pulled me back to the present. ‘Sakhi,’I could almost hear her voice, but the message was gone now, replaced by eerie silence. Presumably, the call had ended.
