He hoped that perhaps, over the years, Tom might develop or change, but Riddle never found friends, love, or anything but followers. His ultimate goal was to become the most powerful dark wizard and make the world in his image, conquering death.

McGonagall's Position in the Order of Schools

One does not just become a professor at Hogwarts, and not the Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA) position, unless one is extremely qualified. Outside of the DADA failure, we can see how intelligent and powerful the Heads of House are. Sprout, while competent, is not quite in the same league. However, Severus Snape was a genius and Filius Flitwick was a powerful and accomplished Charms Master. McGonagall, on the other hand, was a Transfiguration Mistress, likely of the highest order. She was directly under Dumbledore and, as the head of Gryffindor house, was one of his most trusted allies.

For Death Eaters of the outer circle, they would likely not want to cross wands with her, as she is powerful, precise, and a perfectionist, practicing her craft daily and likely still publishing research. The inner circle, however, could definitely contend with her. The Battle of Hogwarts was a testament to her abilities, where her strategic leadership and combat prowess played critical roles in the defense of Hogwarts and her students.
