The Art of Political Bullshitting: How Politicians Dodge Questions and Mislead Us

During my academic career, I coached students on 'exam technique,' ensuring they articulated answers that could stand on their own if the question was forgotten entirely. Yet, when it comes to political responses, this simple test rarely holds true. Politicians often answer without addressing the actual question. This essay explores the art of political bullshitting and its detrimental impact on democratic processes.

The Evolution of Political Bullshit

The ability to bullshit with grace and precision has long been honed. The best political bullshitters are those who are appointed to the most high-profile positions, where their skills are put to the ultimate test. This art form, which has roots thousands of years old, has evolved into a tragic masterpiece, with politicians using it to their advantage.

A prime example is former President George H.W. Bush, who famously vowed, 'read my lips: no new taxes.' This statement became a cornerstone of his campaign, only to be widely disregarded as he faced political pressures. This is a classic case of political bullshit, where the answer does not align with the reality of the situation.

Obfuscation and Evasion

Often, politicians employ obfuscation to avoid answering the questions put to them. They use vague and indirect language to evade the truth. This tactic not only misleads the public but also undermines the integrity of democratic discourse.

Consider the following response: 'The congress will push me to raise taxes and I will say no. Read my lips: no new taxes.' This statement is a perfect example of political equivocation. The actual question, whether there will be a tax increase or not, is deliberately avoided. Instead, it provides a non-answer wrapped in a promise.

The Consequences of Evasion

The rampant use of political bullshitting has severe consequences. It erodes public trust, fosters skepticism, and allows politicians to get away with breaking promises and laws. Myths surrounding their untouchability lead to complacency among the electorate, allowing these same individuals to continue their unethical practices undeterred.

Over time, this has created a culture where politicians believe they can act without repercussions. They amass substantial financial benefits, secure their retirements, and maintain their positions through various means, including systematically avoiding responsibilities and answering questions.

Call to Action: Reclaiming Our Voice

It is clear that the status quo is not working. The majority of elected officials today exhibit a severe lack of concern for those who bear the brunt of their actions. We, the taxpayers, fund their salaries and lives, yet they fail to represent our best interests. It is time for a change.

As former business leaders, we must hold them accountable. Just as a company would fire incompetent employees in the private sector, we must demand accountability from our elected officials. This includes voting them out of office during the upcoming mid-term elections.

Our actions now will determine the future of our democracy. We must engage, educate ourselves, and involved in the political process. We are the ones who put them in power, and it is our responsibility to remove them when they fail to serve.

The midterm elections between now and December present a critical opportunity to effect change. We should not accept mediocrity in leadership; instead, we should support candidates who are committed to diligence and responsibility. By doing so, we can restore integrity to our democratic processes.

It is time to wake up, stand up, and make a change. Our democracy is at stake, and it is our responsibility to protect it.
