Tarantulas and Spiders in New Zealand: More Worry than Wonder

Are Tarantulas Common in New Zealand?

When it comes to tarantulas, the answer is unequivocally no. In fact, tarantulas are so uncommon in New Zealand that they are often not even found in the wild. However, for those interested in understanding the arachnids living in this beautiful country, we have much to explore.

Spiders in New Zealand: A Rich Diversity

New Zealand is home to a diverse array of spider species. With over several hundred native species and many introduced types, these pests are everywhere, albeit they are far from terrifying. Most of the native spider species are small and non-threatening.

One noteworthy exception is the black widow relative, the katipo spider, which is severely endangered. Despite some deaths being linked to the katipo, it is believed these were more often due to heart disease than venom.

Encountering Spiders in Your Home

If you live in a property with lots of vegetation, especially in areas with high humidity, you might occasionally find spiders wandering inside your house. There are several ways to keep these unwanted visitors out, such as insect screens or security doors with insect mesh. Some Kiwis might opt for these, but often, they do not.

Certainly, in some properties in Auckland, you can live without any screens, yet still, escape the unwelcome spider guests. This shows that with some basic precautions, you can reduce the likelihood of spider encounters.

Tarantulas in New Zealand: Nonexistent in Nature

New Zealand does not have tarantulas in the wild. The only poisonous spiders we have are the native katipo and the red back and white tail spiders, all of which are immigrants from Australia. While tarantulas can be found in zoos, they are not native to New Zealand and have never been reported in the wild.

Mygalomorphs, relatives to tarantulas, are present in New Zealand but they are harmless. You are unlikely to find one in your house, much less a tarantula. These mygalomorphs are often the largest spiders you might come across, but they are not tarantulas.

The katipo spider is particularly notable, being our only venomous spider. However, these creatures are extremely rare, found only in remote sand dunes where they are endangered. Few people have even seen them, let alone encountered them in daily life.

Common Spiders in New Zealand

Spiders in New Zealand can be quite varied, but most are quite harmless. One of the largest spiders you might encounter is the Avondale spider, a harmless huntsman spider. While they may look intimidating, they most certainly do not resemble tarantulas.

While rare, occasionally people might mistake other insects for spiders, such as weta or stick insects. Unless you are camping outdoors, your chances of encountering these insects are minimal.

Overcoming Arachnid Fears

For those who are particularly afraid of insects, it's important to remember that most spiders in New Zealand are harmless. If you find these arachnids alarming, consider trying EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique) to reduce your fear. EFT is a powerful tool for addressing phobias and anxieties.

When visiting New Zealand, remember that the greatest danger you might face is not from arachnids, but from the drivers. The best way to enjoy your visit is to relax and appreciate the beautiful landscapes and the rich wildlife of this unique country.
