From Die-Hard Haters to Enthusiastic Fans - Four Surprising K-pop Groups
Sure, we all have our preferences when it comes to K-pop groups. However, there are those moments when a familiar face in the K-pop sphere catches our attention, and we find ourselves drawn to them more than we initially anticipated. This article shares the tales of four K-pop groups that once were seen as no-go areas, but ended up becoming some of our favorite acts. Let's explore their journeys and the factors that led to such unexpected affections.
Aespa: An Unexpected Fan Base
Aespa is one of those groups that I once said I would never become a fan of. There were numerous rumors swirling around them even before they debuted, and I viewed the group with a skeptical eye. However, after thoroughly analyzing their music and getting to know the members, Aespa has become one of my favorite K-pop groups. Their innovative music and unique style make them stand out in an industry already filled with talented performers.
Broadening Horizons with BTS
Back in 2017, I despised the group BTS. Watching them on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, I couldn't help but think, "This group is weird. There’s no way One Direction is worse than them." At the time, I was a dedicated One Direction fan, and I couldn't see any appeal in BTS. It was a common pattern for me to dismiss new groups as inferior just because they were different from what I enjoyed.
However, my opinion began to shift around the end of 2018 when I started exploring K-pop. The video for "Fake Love" was one of the first K-pop songs I listened to, and I admit, I still didn't enjoy it. But then, I stumbled upon DAY6's music, and that was when the floodgates opened for me. Soon, I was completely in love with Blackpink and became a Blackpink fan (or Blackpink').
BTS' album Idol changed my perspective on them. I watched the MV in late December 2018, and it was love at first sight. From that moment on, I couldn't help but binge watch their music videos, slowly but surely becoming part of the A.R.M.Y. (ARMY is BTS's fanbase).
It took me six months to finally realize that BTS was the group on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
From Competing to Supporting: The Exo Journey
When I first got into K-pop in March, I was a devout BTS fan for only a week. Then, I saw Exo as a group that was in rivalry with BTS. Due to this outdated mindset, I vowed not to stan them, showing my loyalty to BTS. It was an awkward realization when I saw a clip of BTS receiving an award, and Exol (Exo's fans) booing them. I thought, "I’m not going to stan a group with such toxic fans." However, later on, I gave it a second chance and fell for Exo’s music and their uniqueness.
Exo's engaging performances and the diverse talent within the group paved the way for me to embrace them. It’s all a testament to how fans can come from all backgrounds and how the music speaks to people in unexpected ways.
So, whether it was Aespa's innovation, BTS's evolving appeal, or Exo's unique charm, these groups managed to break through my initial skepticism and win my heart. Sometimes, it just takes a little more time and an open mind to realize the true magic in K-pop.
