Street Performer's Journey: Challenges and Rewards
As a street performer, the experience can vary widely from day to day. Some audience members listen intently for a while before tipping, while others simply walk by without even a glance. There are those who can be quite frustrating, such as those who take a lengthy video and walk away without leaving a tip. Occasionally, there are even incidents of theft, as I've experienced on two occasions. In recent months, the average tips have increased from one dollar to at least two dollars, and even larger sums of money are now occasionally received. One notable day, I even found a one hundred dollar bill in my bucket.
Experiences and Reactions
Typically, people on the street range from those who ignore you completely to those who offer praise and gratitude. More than 90% of the audience won't tip at all, and even among the others, only a small percentage will give more than a few dollars. Still, my motivation stems from the genuine moments of connection with the people who truly appreciate my music.
My strategy is to perform in shaded parking lots or any other spots that are away from store entrances but still get foot traffic. People often smile or wave as they pass by, showing a moderate level of interest. When they stay to listen, the experience can be profoundly rewarding. Some even compliment me on my musical skills, and several have stopped to drop a few dollars in the bucket. Occasionally, people will even enjoy the show from their parked cars.
Challenges and Positives
One common challenge is the perception that street performing is simply begging. While some people who pass by have this misconception, the others who engage with the music appreciate the positive impact it has on their day. On numerous occasions, performers have been asked to leave due to store management's concerns. However, it's heartening to see that there are some who graciously thank the performer and even offer a word of encouragement or a tip. Occasionally, even security and uniformed police have been seen tipping!
The most gratifying aspect of my street performing journey is the direct correlation between my effort and the financial reward I receive. Every cent that drops in the bucket or falls into the tray is a tangible measure of an act of kindness and appreciation.
Conclusion
Despite the occasional challenges, I find immense joy in the spontaneous connections and genuine appreciation that comes from my music. The street performer's journey is one of both challenges and rewards, enriching my life and the lives of those who stumble upon my performance.
