Strange Moments in Military Service: An Inside Look
As a soldier, you experience a range of experiences - some ordinary and others truly bizarre. From unexpected adventures to eyebrow-raising incidents, military life offers a myriad of stories that are often shared only among peers. This article delves into some of the most intriguing anecdotes from military life, including bizarre technological challenges, personal encounters, and outlandish escapades that convinced (or forced) commanders to turn a blind eye.
Forced to Borrow a Forklift: A Refrigerator's Unlikely Journey
One strange moment I encountered during my Air Force service involved lending a forklift to the Army. My squadron needed a Mod 1 refrigerator - a term for a beer fridge equipped with a built-in beer tap. When we received this fridge, the second floor of our building was completely inaccessible for its installation.
The Air Force didn't have a forklift, but the Army did. So, I had to make a request and borrow one from the Army to move the fridge. It was a humorous situation, blending military logistics and the practical need for refreshments. While a forklift is typically associated with industrial settings, its use in military logistics might be considered quite unusual.
The Incident in 4/3 ACR: A Sensitive Privacy Issue
The Army has long had a policy of strict confidentiality regarding its members. However, there have been instances that tested these boundaries. In my time as the CSM in the 4th Squadron 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) at Fort Carson, Colorado, an incident occurred that tested our discretion.
A barracks charge CQ (Charge of Quarters) received loud music from one of the barracks rooms. After knocking and receiving no response, they obtained a master key to open the door. Inside, they found a white male SSG on all fours, being sodomized by a large black man. Sensing the gravity of the situation, they closed the door and informed the SDNCO (Squadron Duty Noncommissioned Officer).
The next day, when the SSG who had been sodomized approached me, I understood that this was a plausible explanation. The soldier was known for his good character and hard work. After consulting with the squadron commander, we decided to let it go, as there was no legal issue with being sodomized. However, the SDNCO argued for charges and started sharing the story, even naming the soldier involved. I intervened by ordering the SDNCO to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
Barracks Barracudas: Lesbian Activities and More
During one particularly memorable JRTC (Joint Readiness Training Center) rotation at Fort Polk, Louisiana, an incident occurred that mirrored scenes from pornographic movies. The barracks were full of female OH-58D helicopter pilots who were making noise late into the night, causing disruption for others.
When I intervened, I discovered an unexpected group engagement occurring in the barracks. Women were on all fours, receiving intimate attention, and an audience of WACs (Women's Army Corps) was watching. The incident was a mix of curious romantic activities and exaggerated demonstrations that were designed to attract attention.
I addressed the situation calmly, telling them to move to the second floor. I assured them that if such activities continued, I would call in MPs. This highlight the dual nature of barracks life - a mix of professional responsibilities and the human desire for intimacy and entertainment.
Mysterious Striptease-flights: A SMC's Perspective
One of the most unusual incidents I witnessed involved seven Washington State ANG Airmen from the 141st Air Refueling Wing. Allegedly, they took off their clothing and placed a KC-135C Stratotanker on autopilot while the cabin was empty. This occurred one to four times between June and July 1998 during night flights.
The involved airmen resigned from their positions amidst media reports, and the remaining two agreed to resign as well. The decision to resign without further investigation was a testament to the sensitive nature of the events and the need to maintain the unit's confidentiality.
These incidents highlight the diverse and sometimes unconventional aspects of military life, showcasing the blend of professionalism and the human element that can sometimes lead to humorous anecdotes and bizarre memories.
