Skills Lost to Growth: Reflections on a Journey to Adulthood
As I've grown older, I've noticed that I've lost a series of skills that once came naturally to me. What does it take to maintain and cultivate these talents as we mature? This article delves into the skills I've lost while growing up, reflecting on the impact of these changes on my life, and offering insights on how to keep certain skills alive and thriving.
Navigation to New Technologies
When I was younger, I was sharp as a tack when it came to understanding new technologies and gadgets. Whether it was a new video game console or a cutting-edge tech device, I could grasp their complexities effortlessly. My parents often turned to me for tech assistance, finding it hard to believe that they couldn't figure out how to use something.
Now, as an adult, I've noticed a shift. Whenever something gets upgraded, revised, or replaced, it often leaves me feeling panicked and intimidated. I often find myself struggling with technology that I once mastered. Instead of a person who can adapt to new challenges, I often feel like I'm stuck in my ways, unable to embrace change.
Lost Talents and Skills
While I lost several skills over time, some stood out more than others. Here are the top three that I've regrettably given up on:
1. Drawing
During my childhood, drawing was one of my favorite hobbies. Sadly, as I grew older, I found myself drawn less and less to it. The challenges of mastering art, the struggles with technique, and the sinking feeling of losing a skill once thought to be simple, all combined to diminish my interest. It's a skill I regret losing, as it could have been a therapeutic and creative outlet.
2. Sports: Cricket
Being an avid cricket player in my younger years was a source of joy and companionship. However, as I grew older, a combination of physical changes, pressures, and other interests led me to abandon the sport. The loss of physical prowess and the camaraderie that came from the game are gone, and the regret sometimes keeps me from picking it up again.
3. Singing
Singing was like a gift to me. I performed in school plays, won awards, and even got accolades for being the best singer of the year. Yet, as my voice started to change, I began to receive fewer accolades, which eventually led to a significant loss of confidence. I eventually stopped singing entirely, a decision that haunts me to this day as I miss the joy and the discipline it offered.
Vanished Talents and Habits
Along with the skills I've lost, I've also seen my habits erode. Below are some of the habits that have completely vanished from my life:
1. Grasping Power
When I was younger, I had an exceptional grasp on everything, be it studies or physical tasks. Fast forward to today, and this exceptional ability is no longer as strong as it once was. This gradual loss of comprehension and retention has left me feeling slightly vulnerable in both professional and personal settings.
2. Extroversion
My ability to mix with different age groups was another talent that diminished. Although I can't pinpoint the exact moment or reason for this change, I can tell you that it feels like a piece of me that's gone. The social interactions that once brought me joy have become more challenging, and I can't help but wonder if this loss is part of growing up.
3. Inculcating Good Habits
There was a time when I was praised for being a very well-behaved child, leading to a strong sense of self-discipline. This discipline wasn't only related to academics, but it extended to my lifestyle and overall behavior. Eventually, the drive to maintain these good habits waned, and now, I find myself struggling to keep them intact.
Academic Priorities
In the era of intense academic competition, I used to prioritize my studies above everything else. After school, I would immediately finish all my homework before indulging in anything else. This strict adherence to my academic responsibilities is something I'm losing, and it's impacting my overall well-being.
Lessons Learned
Eliminating these skills and habits has come at a cost. However, I've learned a valuable lesson about the importance of maintaining balance and not allowing these aspects to fade away. Keeping these skills and habits alive, despite the busyness of life, can make a significant difference in personal and professional growth.
