Scandals and Fan Behaviors: A Journey from BTS to NCT

In the world of K-pop, scandals can often lead fans to reconsider their loyalty and support. For many, personal experiences and the behaviors exhibited within fandoms can be pivotal in reshaping their preferences. In this article, we explore a unique perspective on how a fan's journey took them from a passionate supporter of BTS to an enthusiast of NCT, influenced by internal fandom dynamics and scandals.

From a BTS Fandom to a NCTZEN

Until November 2019, I was deeply entrenched in the BTS fandom under the pseudonym ARMY. My passion for BTS was ignited not just by the music, but by the sense of community and the feeling of belonging I experienced within the fandom. Together with other fans, I felt as if BTS and ARMY were one big family, sharing in the joy and support of each other's comebacks and achievements.

However, my enthusiasm started to wane when I observed certain behaviors of ARMY fans. The collaboration between BTS and Halsey brought about a shift, where ARMY began to be more self-important and less supportive of other fandoms. My admiration for the group diminished as I witnessed the toxic behavior they exhibited towards fellow fans and groups. This toxic environment, rather than a scandal involving the group, fostered a sense of disillusionment and ultimately led me to leave the ARMY fandom.

Moving from ARMY to NCTZEN

Leaving the ARMY fandom was not an easy decision, but it was one that felt necessary to maintain a positive outlook on the K-pop world. Since then, I have embraced theosphere of the NCT fandom, particularly as a member of the NCTZEN subculture. Here, I found a community that values harmony and mutual respect, traits that distinguish it from the more contentious ARMY fandom.

NCTZEN’s journey has been marked by challenges and accusations, much like many other fandoms. For example, the chart performance of Kick It sparked a debate, but the toxic behavior exhibited by ARMY fans against NCTZEN merely reinforced my decision to stay within a more positive environment. Intriguingly, the situation reversed when an accusation was made against BTS member Jungkook for touching NCT member Jaehyun's bottom. Initially, NCTZEN defended Jungkook, which mirrored the behavior of NCT fans towards their idol. However, when it was revealed that the accusation was a fake, and the offenders were ultimately from the ARMY fandom, it served as a stark reminder of the depth of toxicity one might endure in certain fandoms.

Conclusion: Embracing a Healthier Community

The decision to leave a fandom and join another is never straightforward. The journey to become a NCTZEN has been enlightening, providing a contrast between different fan behaviors and fostering a more positive and respectful approach to K-pop. While I held no ill will towards ARMY and BTS, the experiences within both fandoms have helped me form a clearer understanding of what I value in a K-pop fandom—namely, mutual support and respect for all involved.
