How to Relearn a Musical Instrument You Once Knew
As we reflect on our past, some of us realize we should have prioritized our passions and hobbies. Here is a story about someone who decided to rekindle their love for the guitar and share how it changed their life.
Setting Aside Time for Passion
Sometimes, giving yourself permission to focus on your interests is the only way to ensure you don't miss out on the joy they bring. For many, this realization comes too late. However, there's always a chance to correct this. Dedicating time for lessons and practice is essential to making progress.
If you have once played a musical instrument and long to pick it up again, setting a commitment for yourself is key. If you have a bad day and can't practice, don't beat yourself up. Just make sure you catch up as soon as possible. This discipline will ensure you stay on track and don't let it slip away again.
MY JOURNEY INTO MUSIC
My own experience started in the early 1970s when I would practice the guitar every day. I was part of a few rock bands and even supported the birth of new guitarists in my family. Over time, life took over with marriage, a family, and a demanding career. I managed to play occasionally, but for the most part, I didn't pick up my instruments for 40 years.
At the age of 61, I restarted my musical journey. Working with another instructor at my college, who had a similar story of playing bass guitar, reenergized my passion. I decided to take out my guitars from my closet and start practicing again. My wife, who has always supported me, insisted on getting a USA Stratocaster in January 2019. At the time, I had 3 stratocasters including the new one, and I wanted a guitar closer to what I used in the 70s.
FRESH START WITH MY FAVORITE INSTRUMENT
Reconnecting with my instruments was as simple as that. Since then, I have played them as much as possible. My oldest son crafted a handcrafted telecaster for me, a great musical companion. This guitar, with its precision-built Fender neck and quality parts, has added a new dimension to my playing. I use different tunings for different songs, and YouTube videos have significantly improved my skills.
ENJOYING MUSIC AGAIN
Music isn't just about becoming a rock star again; it's about enjoying the experience of playing. At 67, I have a music studio in my garage and plan to play more often on Saturdays. This summer, I took a break from the garage vibe, but my son's completion of an AS/RN program and his role as a Program Director have kept me busy. It’s essential to balance personal and professional responsibilities when it comes to rekindling old passions.
ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO REJOIN THE MUSICIAN'S RANKS
I highly recommend you and try. It isn't that difficult. YouTube offers lessons that make learning and relearning easy. They also have backing tracks that can help you practice. Personal favorites include Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, and several others. Playing without always trying to become a rock star can bring immense satisfaction.
CONCLUSION
Time spent playing music is never wasted. It enriches your life, fosters a sense of accomplishment, and can provide a source of comfort and joy. So, if you feel like you left your musical journey behind, consider picking up where you left off. Music is a lifelong journey, and every note played is a step forward.
