Reflections on UWC: Memorable Moments and Experiences

UWC, or the United World Colleges, has been a unique journey for me, filled with both memorable moments and challenging experiences. My time here has been transformative, shaping who I am today, and I find myself often reflecting on the incredible experiences that have defined my UWC years.

UWC at a Glance

UWC is more than just an educational institution; it's a community that fosters personal growth, international understanding, and a commitment to peace and equality. I have only been here for three months, but the impact has already been profound.

UWC and Me

Before I arrived at UWC, I was not fully comfortable with who I was. However, the unique environment at UWC has allowed me to explore all my interests, find new ones, and during my time here, I have realized that rock climbing is not for me. It's a place where late-night conversations about tea often morph into deep discussions about life. These interactions have not only enriched my intellectual and emotional growth but have also made me a more open-minded and empathetic individual.

Memorable Moments at UWC

1. Late Night Talks

One of the most delightful aspects of my time at UWC is the late-night discussions with my peers. I still fondly remember a time when my friend and I were supposed to be studying for Economics, but the revision session turned into a philosophical debate that continued until three in the morning. These conversations have been a significant part of my growth, fostering critical thinking and a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives. There are countless other insightful discussions that have left a lasting impact on me.

2. Peaceful Debate and Conflict Resolution

Despite the many late-night talks, there have been moments of intense conflict. However, the UWC spirit teaches us to resolve disputes peacefully. There was an instance when my friends got into a heated argument, but we reminded ourselves of the UWC principles and worked towards peaceful resolution. This experience has equipped me with valuable conflict resolution skills and has helped me maintain a peaceful and respectful campus environment.

3. Cultural Immersion and Experiences

My first day in Mumbai, India, was a whirlwind of emotions. Arriving at the Mumbai airport around midnight and taking a five-hour car ride to our school was an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience, especially as we passed through villages where locals were celebrating Bollywood music all night long. This experience set the tone for the vibrant and diverse culture that UWC exposes us to.

Other favorite moments include the mud Olympics, where our second-year students set off a false fire alarm at 6 am, forcing us newbies to run to the field and do push-ups in the mud. This event, along with spending 50 hours straight on an Indian public train during a ten-day project week, and volunteering in rural Northern India were eye-opening experiences. These moments have not only taught me about the real India but have also made invaluable memories that I cherish.

4. Fellow Students and Food Logistical Challenges

Interacting with my peers at UWC has been a highlight. We have all stumbled and fallen in our two years, but every time someone helped me get up after I tripped, it made me feel more connected to this community. The camaraderie and support have been vital in navigating both the good and bad moments.

One of the other amusing aspects of UWC life has been the quality (or lack thereof) of the food in the cafeteria. Occasionally, I found myself faced with nights of instant noodle dinners because the food just wasn't that great. But these small challenges only added to the charm of my experience.

Occasionally, uncanny and surprising moments occur, like finding frogs in the toilets of my dorm. These surreal encounters have added a touch of mystery and adventure to my time at UWC.

Continued Growth and Impact

UWC has not only changed me but has also created a strong network of support that extends beyond the campus walls. We have regular reunions in most major cities, where people go out of their way to help each other—whether it's with career advancement or couch surfing. These connections and support systems ensure that the positive impact of UWC resonates long after graduation.

As I continue my journey, I am truly grateful for my time at UWC and hope to carry the lessons I've learned to wherever life's journey may take me next.
