Reflections on Starting High School: A Journey into Adolescence
Starting high school can be an exciting yet daunting experience. For me, this journey was filled with both challenges and unforgettable moments. As a new student in Grade 10, I had several experiences that shaped my early high school life.
The First Day in Grade 10 English Class
My first day in Grade 10 English class was a bit of a blur. I remember feeling lost and running a few minutes late. However, my kind English teacher didn't mark me absent, which was a relief, given it was only the first day. A mutual friend hinted that one of my classmates had a crush on me. At the time, I couldn't believe it, but I simply laughed it off. This encounter marked the beginning of a series of experiences that would become common during my high school years.
Making Connections through Classmates
One of my close friends from Grade 10, someone I'll refer to as Friend A, became an invaluable source of support. She edited my essays and provided invaluable feedback, including my Source Analysis essay and my Position Paper essay for history class. Another friend, Friend B, was just as helpful, editing my Critical Analytical Response to Text essay during the second semester. These collaborative relationships helped me navigate the academic demands of high school.
Balancing Schedules and Managing Information Overload
My schedule was quite packed, with classes ranging from first period Baking 10 in the morning to Science 10 in the last period of the day. This was a significant challenge, especially as a fifteen-year-old female. Information was thrown at me at a rapid pace, and it was exhausting. Thankfully, Friend A also assisted me in editing my essays, which helped keep me on track both academically and emotionally.
High School Friendships
My first year in high school was filled with a variety of friends. We exchanged phone numbers at the beginning of the year and kept in touch through various social media platforms. Even though not all these friends remained in my second semester, I maintained connections with many of them throughout the year. Some went to my new high school, while others did not. We continued to stay in touch on platforms like Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
A Doomsday Scenario in Gym Class
One incident that stands out was during my first day of gym class. The popular guy in my class decided to initiate a bizarre prank. He and his buddies picked me up and dragged me into the showers, causing damage to both my hands. The nurse asked how those wounds happened, and I had to lie and say I had grabbed onto a metal locker, causing the deep cuts. This event was traumatic, and I had to cancel my piano lessons until my injuries healed. Staying true to my skills, I had been studying the piano for ten years, a testament to my dedication to music.
As I reflect on my first year of high school, these moments form an important part of my transitioning into adolescence. From dealing with class pranks to forming lasting friendships, every encounter was a lesson in resilience and growth.
