Reflections on Graduation: My Journey and a Generational Study

As I reflect on my previous graduation, I find myself lost in memories of receiving my degree from Prof. H.K Sharma, a moment captured in a YouTube video I cherished. Eager and excited for my moment of honor, I took a candid photo with my friend at the ceremony. However, modern times have brought a shift, where graduations are sometimes seen as merely a stepping stone rather than a significant milestone. Yet, 2020 was a unique year, as it marked the first batch of degrees awarded OFFLINE since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. Though two years have passed, the significance of that moment lingers.

Graduation Memories: From Confetti to Excitement

Each graduation is a bittersweet chapter in one’s life, marked by both joy and nostalgia. My boarding school experience was challenging; home-sickness and discomfort made it a difficult place to thrive. On the day of departure, students gathered in the common room or TV room, then boarded coaches for the long journey home. Surprisingly, I never got someone's phone number or address, leaving me feeling alone despite the familiar faces. Upon arriving in Norwich, I was relieved to leave the school behind, and the news of my father's promotion was a welcome surprise. However, maturity was not yet on my side, as I remained quite immature and the experience left much to be desired.

A Descriptive Memory: Studying and Learning

My academic journey wasn't just about attendance and submission. Instead, it revolved around studying, attending welcome parties, and participating in college fests. The urge to study in the library and make new connections was overwhelming. Lockdown wasn't a deterrent, as I managed to complete my graduation course before the pandemic began. Reflecting on those times, I find it hard to believe that being punctual for classes and managing work on time was such a significant challenge. It was all part of a grand and happy memory.

Cross-Generational Observations on Graduation

My reflections on graduation go beyond personal experiences and extend to a broader generational perspective. Graduations have been milestones for generations, filled with both joy and challenges. For instance, in 1970, the speaker at my high school graduation was critical, calling my generation "a generation of pigs." In 1974, college graduation saw similar criticism. My MBA graduation in 1997 was different, as the class speaker did not blame the younger generation. Instead, Jimmy Carter delivered a motivational speech, urging the graduates to follow the example set by the Baby Boom generation.

In 2001, my PhD graduation was much more upbeat, partially because I got to sit on stage under a canopy, shielding me from the elements. More recently, I have attended numerous graduations of students, and while some were terrible, others were delightful. Jimmy Carter and Leon Panetta delivered some of the best speeches, with Panetta still being the head of the CIA.

Conclusion

Through my journey and reflections, it is clear that each graduation holds a unique significance, not just for the individual but also for the broader context of their generation. While there are challenges and criticisms, there are also moments of joy, happiness, and growth. Whether it is a simple ceremony or a grand celebration, each graduation is a testament to the resilience and determination of the graduates.
