Reflections on Family Traditions: A Celebration of Parental Love and Respect

Family traditions are invisible threads that weave through our lives, binding us together with love and respect. These moments, often simple and meaningful, shape our perspectives and values. One such nifty tradition in my family, displayed through the actions of my parents, is a display of profound respect and love.

Feeding Etiquette: A Timeless Tradition

One of the quirkiest and yet most endearing habits my parents have is their custom of feeding each other the first morsel of every meal whenever possible. This is not a practice that started yesterday but one that has been repeated over the past 22 years. My father, with a gentle placement of the first bite of his food to the side of his plate, seems to be asking my mother to partake. Swiftly, my mother picks up that offering, while putting a piece of roti (a traditional flatbread) in his plate in return. This exchange is seamless, often unnoticed by others, and it’s a heartwarming sight to witness.

When we were at my grandmother's house for lunch, my father was served first as was the custom. However, he did what he always does—place a small, carefully chosen piece of his food on the side. My mother picked it up, slightly gripping the edge of her utensil, and set it back on his plate, impressing a bite of roti into it. This exchange, so simple and yet so profound, is a testament to the deep respect and love they hold for each other.

Character Traits and Life Lessons

My parents embody several positive character traits that are not just limited to this tradition. My mother, like a gentle river, is chilled out and always positive. Life’s little dilemmas do not ruffle her feathers, but she has her battles, much like the rest of us. However, her 'can-do attitude' is something to admire. She has faced and continues to face challenges with an unwavering spirit, drawing strength from within.

My father, a retired army officer, has shown remarkable dedication and dependability. From the onset of my memory, he has been supporting my mother on numerous household chores and running errands. This sense of partnership and teamwork not only binds the family but also sets a strong foundation of support and unity.

Undeniable Strength and Humility

Both my parents exude an admirable strength and humility. My mother, in particular, has faced challenges head-on, showcasing a dependable spirit and fighting spirit that is commendable. She is a true leader and an inspiration. On the other hand, my father, with his work ethic and humility, becomes indispensable in our lives. His sense of duty and commitment is something I, and I imagine many others, hold in high regard.

These traits, instilled by my parents, have a ripple effect, shaping the individual I have become. Their wisdom, love, and support have repeatedly been a guiding light, instilling in me the values and virtues that form the core of my personality. I am immensely proud to call them my parents, and I hope to emulate their positive traits in my own life.

GOD BLESS THEM. MISS THEM ALWAYS.
