Reflections on 4th of July Celebrations: Home Alone or Part of the Show?
It's 4th of July again, a time when many people celebrate with loud fireworks displays. But, for some, it’s just another day at home. Let’s explore my personal perspective on how I celebrate this national Independence Day.
Personal Preferences and Considerations
For me, fireworks are not my thing. I used to enjoy them with my family, but now, with no family around, there’s no real reason to continue the tradition. Contributing to the noise is not something I’m comfortable with, especially given the city’s noise policies and the sensitivity of people with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and frightened animals.
Previous Years and Experiences
From 2011 to 2016, my wife and I lived on a lake across from a bible camp that had a fireworks program on July 4th, often on the closest Saturday. Since 2017, we moved to an old farm property where the owner and his friends shoot off fireworks on a suitable Saturday evening. This has been a convenient arrangement, as no additional effort from my side is needed.
Finding My Own 4th of July Celebrations
Instead of joining the crowds, I choose to celebrate from my hillside home overlooking the town. The view from my back windows provides a panoramic spectacle of multiple fireworks displays along the entire line of sight. Last year, I ventured out on the 4th at 9 pm and didn't come back until 11 pm, thoroughly captivated by the seemingly unending fireworks displays.
Honoring the Veterans
On this special day, I wish to honor the veterans who continue to serve. Every year, I fly my flag high and ensure that those sleeping in the local cemetery are honored with clean, fresh flags placed at the head of their graves. I replace the tattered or inadequate ones that don’t meet my standards, all done outside of the official Cemetery Committee. This act is a simple tribute to their service and sacrifice.
Part of the Community Celebrations
Despite my disinterest in fireworks, my house is always a hub of activity on July 4th. My husband prepares a delicious BBQ, typically a smoked pork butt, which culminates in pulled pork with all the fixings. We gather on the deck, and my husband sets off the fireworks. We enjoy the festive atmosphere, and when nature seems to spoil the fun with a sudden downpour, our neighbors are disappointed. But that's just part of the charm of a traditional neighborhood celebration.
Ultimately, every 4th of July is a unique experience, whether you’re setting off your own fireworks, going to a special event, or simply staying home and watching the displays from your window or porch. Celebrate in a way that makes you happy and honors the significance of the day.
