Realizing the Awesomeness: Personal Growth Through Books and Writing
Turning the pages of a book has evolved from a laborious chore into a profound source of inspiration.
A Journey into the World of Literature
Until my late twenties, reading was not a passion to be embraced but a task to be endured. Youth was marked by a disdain for literature, seeing it as a waste of time. It wasn't until a tumultuous period and copious amounts of free time that I decided to give reading another chance. The Alchemist was my first doorway into the world of fiction, but it was Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance that truly ignited a lifelong love for the written word.
Biographies and the Power of Imagination
Endurance astonished me with its historical account of an incredible journey. Not only was the story fascinating, but the imaginative immersion it provoked was unparalleled. Sitting at my desk, I vividly felt as if I were alongside Ernest Shackleton and his team. This book was perhaps read too quickly; no espresso shortage was needed as I polished off the book in a weekend. Motivated by this experience, I delved into biographies of other figures that piqued my interest. This newfound love for biographies has become a cornerstone of my reading repertoire.
The Impact on My Life
My life has been enriched immeasurably by reading. From the nuances of business to the thrill of adventure, from profound insights to the mysteries of crime, I'm engrossed in an array of genres. On average, I manage to read three books a month, with a preference for both fiction and nonfiction. This reading habit has profoundly impacted my daily life, contributing to personal and professional growth.
Personal Growth through Writing
Concurrently with my voracious appetite for reading, a steadfast journey has guided my pen to a rather different realm. Poetry has been my longstanding companion, reflecting my journey through life. Before the age of 14, my first two poems were published, igniting a passion that continues to this day.
Poetic Endeavors and Personal Expression
Writing poetry at 10 helped me navigate the tumultuous waters of youth, providing solace and clarity without the need for anyone else's presence. Decades later, the act of writing poetry continues, a tool for healing and a touchstone for connecting with others. I've copyrighted a collection of over 200 poems and continue to publish my work, both for sale and as gifts. Sharing my poetry has allowed me a unique form of expression, proving that writing can bridge gaps and create understanding.
Reflecting on Life’s Joys and Adventures
Throughout my life, I've witnessed incredible transformations, especially during my forties. The mind, both a wondrous creator and a source of unease, is a powerful tool. Throughout my struggles and triumphs, I've exercised my imagination, often feeling the potential for splendid adventures. A realization of this potential fills me with awe.
The Question of When
When did I believe I was on to something new? There isn't a specific date; it's more of an ongoing process. Writing poetry and embarking on writing journeys, both for myself and others, is a continuous exploration. It's the quiet, often hushed, process of finding oneself through creation.
Encouragement for Adventure
From an early age, life has been filled with wonders and challenges. Adventuring into nature and later into the realm of knowledge has enriched my experiences. For anyone feeling uninspired or seeking new adventures, remember that every journey, whether through books or pen to paper, holds the potential for something awe-inspiring.
