Ranking Hindu Mythological TV Serials: A Critical Analysis
When it comes to Hindu mythology, the television has been a prominent medium for storytelling. Many of these serials, while aimed at engaging audiences, often deviate from the original scriptures. However, a few stand out for their adherence to traditional narratives and artistic merit. Below, I offer a personal ranking of popular Hindu mythological TV serials, focusing on their accuracy and the quality of their presentation.
THE GOOD ONES
Om Namah Shivaya
"Om Namah Shivaya" was a relatively accurate portrayal of the Shiva Purana and Linga Purana. While the serial faced issues, such as the change in the actor playing Rudra and the creation of their own Asuras, it remains a worthwhile watch. If you were a child like me, you might have adored this series.
Devon Ke Dev Mahadev
The serial "Devon Ke Dev Mahadev" exceeded expectations, primarily due to Mogit Raina's portrayal of Lord Shiva. Despite some inaccuracies such as Indra being portrayed as evil, Kartikeya's jealous behavior, and the misrepresentation of Jalandhara, DKDM remains a favorite. The portrayal of Lord Shiva, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, is unparalleled.
BR Chopra's Mahabharata
Bharatendu Harishchandra 's Mahabharata was the most accurate of all the serials based on the epic. The casting was perfect, and the story was 80% accurate. Mazoom Raza's dialogues were well-written, and the battle scenes were more realistic than modern-day adaptations. Minor details such as the accurate lengths of the bows and the depiction of pauldrons, chariots, and flags made this a standout.
OKAY CATEGORY
Ramanad Sagar Ramayana
While Ramanad Sagar's Ramayana was nice, it was too slow and boring. The epic could have been directed better, as it had deep conversations and great battle scenes. However, the casting of Rama, Hanuman, and Ravana was lackluster, which detracted from the overall quality.
Vishnu Purana and Shri Krishna by Ramanad Sagar
Ramanad Sagar's Vishnu Purana and Shri Krishna were average, lacking the depth and portrayal that can make these tales compelling.
WORST ONES
Starplus Mahabharata
The Starplus version of Mahabharata is a notable disappointment. Except for the soundtracks, most of the serial was inadmissible. It was only about 30% accurate, making it a subpar watch.
Suryaputra Karna
This serial is so poorly executed that it leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth much like chewing the wrong tablet. It is not only inaccurate but one could argue it is not even 1% correct. Draining to watch, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Karmaphal Data Shani
The portrayal of Shani (the planet Saturn) defeating Veerabhadra, a powerful deity, is a humorous and ill-advised attempt at storytelling, unlikely to satisfy any serious mythology enthusiast.
Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman and Siya Ke Ram
These serials, particularly those revolving around Hanuman and the story of Siya and Ram, fail to capture the essence and depth of the original tales. They are best avoided for those with a keen interest in mythology.
Mahakali - Anth Bhi Arambh Bhi and Vighnaharta Sri Ganesha
For those with a strong constitution, these serials, revolving around Mahakali and Vighnaharta Sri Ganesha, may be considered, albeit with caution. For the easily offended, they could be a harsh experience.
FOR STRONG MINDED PEOPLE ONLY
Radha Krishna Serial is a targeted series for those who are emotionally resilient. It is designed to challenge and potentially disturb those who are sensitive. It should be approached with caution.
