Productive Accomplishments During the Lockdown: Lessons and Insights
During the lockdown period, many individuals found themselves with unexpected free time, leading to both personal and community-based productivity. In this article, we explore some of the significant achievements made during this challenging time, focusing on charitable efforts, personal growth, and the shift towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
Charitatil Contributions: A Unique PC Loan Scheme
Run by a small charity in Edinburgh, Scotland, called Pass IT On, I led the establishment of a unique PC Loan scheme when the lockdown hit. This initiative aimed to support those who might have otherwise struggled to obtain necessary IT equipment for their children's schoolwork or to continue working from home. The workshop was equipped with older yet still functional computers, and we collaborated with our regular clients to help distribute these resources.
Under this loan scheme, people received a computer that was delivered to them. They had to pay a deposit, which would be returned with a small deduction for software licenses. Approximately 120 computers were loaned out, significantly impacting the lives of many students and workers who were able to continue their education and work from home.
Personal Growth and Discoveries
On a more personal note, the lockdown period presented an opportunity for various forms of personal growth. For one, I discovered my inner strength through new hobbies and self-improvement. I began drawing, transforming from a complete novice to a proficient artist in just a short period. This newfound artistic venture became a significant source of joy and relaxation during a challenging time.
Another positive outcome was my significant weight loss. The lockdown provided me with the time and space to engage in regular exercise and yoga, routines that I had previously ignored. This period also saw me develop a deeper appreciation for nature and a strong desire to live more sustainably.
Community Engagement and Sustainable Living
In addition to these personal developments, the lockdown encouraged me to reassess my relationship with consumerism. I reflected on the syndrome of obsessive consumerism and its impact on individuals and society. While the virus may be manageable in the short term, the long-term economic fallout is profound and far-reaching. The choice to either change one's lifestyle or succumb to consumerism is evident, and sustainability became a top priority.
Given the importance of helping those in need, I also became more involved in local communities. I discovered a new group of people committed to providing food and shelter for stray dogs, and others who wanted to help those left homeless or struggling during the crisis. By donating to appropriate charities and NGOs, we can make a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals.
Looking ahead, I have decided to focus more on the people and experiences that matter most. I plan to invest time in activities that bring me closer to nature, discovering its beauty through photography and travel. The lockdown period has shaped these future aspirations, and I am eager to embrace life in a more meaningful and sustainable way.
Conclusion
The lockdown period brought about numerous achievements, not just in terms of charity and personal growth but also in redefining our relationship with consumerism and community engagement. These experiences serve as a reminder of the importance of being adaptable, supportive, and mindful of our surroundings and the people around us.
