Personal Security: My Reasons for Bringing a Gun to Social Events in Retirement Communities
Living in a major retirement community in Florida, I have noticed a significant number of residents rely on golf carts for transportation. However, personal security measures are just as essential. In this article, I will share my personal reasons for bringing a firearm to social events, specifically house parties, and the importance of being prepared while adhering to legal responsibilities.
Concealed Carry for Security
In my community, some residents bring legally obtained firearms with them both in golf carts and to social events, such as concerts and house parties. We always keep our weapons concealed, just like my circle of friends. As events become increasingly unpredictable across the country, it's crucial to be prepared. When carrying a firearm, I am more polite and aware of the potential consequences, demonstrating that being prepared doesn't diminish one's professionalism.
I have invested a considerable amount in various holsters to ensure that my firearm doesn't 'print' or show through clothing. Although some argue that pulling a gun is a last resort, the importance of being ready cannot be overstated.
Responsible Gun Ownership
Gun owners in New Jersey, like myself, are responsible. The story referenced is a specific incident; yet, as a law-abiding citizen, I carry my firearm not just in heavily populated areas, but also in less predictable situations, such as when visiting my parents or attending children's birthday parties in unsafe neighborhoods.
My concealed carry license (CCW) is always with me, and my firearm is concealed properly unless someone were to grab me around the crotch, a practice known as appendix carry. This method ensures that the weapon is never visible.
The world is full of people who pose a threat to others. Carrying a firearm daily is a measure I take to protect myself and others. Seconds can make or break a situation, and police response times may not be sufficient in critical moments.
Legal and Ethical Considerations
Not all states have the same gun laws. In states like Texas or Florida, many gun owners are legally permitted to carry firearms. In Stand Your Ground states, there are fewer restrictions on the use of force in self-defense situations. As an individual with an LTC (License to Carry), I am always prepared, regardless of the circumstances.
While I carry a firearm, I fully understand the importance of using it responsibly. The shooters mentioned in certain incidents were likely not legally obtaining or using firearms. They were breaking other laws as well, such as murder. The argument that more laws will solve the issue is not supported by evidence. Instead, ensuring that legal gun owners understand their responsibilities and rights is more effective.
Ultimately, being prepared and responsible is key. I am certain that the majority of people who carry firearms do so for the right reasons, regardless of the occasional headlines in the news. The importance of personal security cannot be understated, and being aware of one's surroundings and preparedness is a vital part of that.
