Nostalgia Unleashed: Our Favorite Children’s Day Memories

November 14th marks Children’s Day, a time when we reminisce about the joy and simplicity of our childhood. Growing up, this day held a lot of significance during our school days. Just the word 'school' evokes a flood of memories and feelings. Let’s get back to those cherished moments that we made on this special day in school.

A Day Before Children's Day

The preparations for Children's Day would begin a day in advance. The main task was to get ready with the traditional white dress, pant, and the right pair of shoes and socks. This usually came with a lot of excitement but also a bit of nerves, especially for those who were not very confident about wearing white clothes.

Most of us would also receive pocket money from our parents to spend on the day. Saving those 5-10 rupees to get 2 samosas, chips, and chocolates would be a common activity. Some of us would run to our friends first to share the joy and have company during the day. This would continue till the day after, as we would wait to gift our friends a samosa or two.

Prayers and Cultural Events

The morning would begin with a prayer session by our teachers, and it was a mixed feeling. While we respected the rituals, the 10 minutes of boring speeches by the principal seemed unbearable. But then, there was the lighter side. Our teachers and the principal would often joke around with us, and that made the atmosphere fun.

The highlight of the day, however, was the cultural events that followed. Fancy dress competitions, which were the easiest for many to participate in, brought out the creative side of everyone. For the younger kids, frog races and jalebi races were hilarious and filled with fun and laughter. The senior school students would set up stalls selling various food items, and everyone from teachers to students and parents would participate in trying out these delicacies. It was a delightful showcase of school talent and community spirit.

Teenage Love and Dreams

For those in the teenage phase, the main goal of the day was to catch a glimpse of their childhood crush. It was a whirlwind of excitement, anticipation, and teenage love. The day ended with the distribution of chocolates and biscuits, which was a smile-worthy moment for many of us.

We would all be asked during Children’s Day what we wanted to be in our life, and every answer was fascinating—doctor, engineer, pilot, astronaut, or even the Prime Minister. However, now that we are grown-ups, we often find ourselves looking back at these simple, yet sweet moments, and wish we could go back to those days.

Apart from the daily school activities, this day taught us the importance of playing, sharing, and creating memories. I hope this reflection of my own experience has made you feel nostalgic. Feel free to share your own school day stories with us. Let’s not be resistant to these beautiful memories.
