My Journey Through Broadway: From Cats to Hamilton
Ever since my first encounter with Broadway, the magic of live theater has never left me. My journey began with Cats, the iconic musical that captivated my young mind many years ago. This article takes you through my theatrical experiences and my dream list of upcoming shows.
Discovering the Magic of the Stage
My first exposure to a Broadway show was Cats when I was just 12 years old. The experience was so vivid and profound that I still hold on to the t-shirt I bought from that show. This t-shirt, bought in 1994, stayed in my possession until I was almost 30 years old, when the orange stain on the rose made me reluctantly part with it. It’s an unusual keepsake for a theater enthusiast; however, it remains a cherished reminder of my journey into the world of Broadway.
The Immortal 1994 Experience
Beauty and the Beast was a defining moment in my theatrical experience, but I was lucky enough to see this legendary show with its original cast. Susan Egan’s portrayal of Belle and Terrence Mann’s embodiment of The Beast made a lasting impression on me. The magic of the show was particularly enchanting around the moment where The Beast transformed into a prince. This was a magical performance, perhaps more magical for a 12-year-old, and it left an indelible mark on my heart.
My Broadway Journey Continues
Since then, my love for Broadway has only grown. To date, I've attended almost 200 shows, each one unique and unforgettable. The Lion King holds a special place in my heart as the best introduction to Broadway at 13, with its blend of animals and clear messages. Although Wicked was a show I couldn't miss at 14, younger audiences and even parents can appreciate its depth and complexity.
Tasty and Sparkling Moments
More recently, I was fortunate enough to see School of Rock and Anastasia. School of Rock brought back fun memories with its lively soundtrack and the relatable story of young people finding their passion. Even though I was a bit too old for princesses, the sparkles and the charming character D'Mitri kept me engaged and entertained. These shows are a delightful mix of nostalgia and vibrant storytelling.
Future Shows: My Dream List
Among the many shows I still dream of seeing, Kinky Boots and Waitress top my list. Kinky Boots is a testament to the power of inclusivity and the transformation of dreams into reality, making it a perfect choice for mature audiences. Similarly, Waitress resonates deeply with its relatable story and strong female characters. Both are performances that could appeal to my evolving tastes as I grow older.
Soundtracks That Catalyze My Desire
The soundtracks of Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen have played a crucial role in nurturing my craving for Broadway. While Hamilton blends hip-hop with historical storytelling, Dear Evan Hansen addresses contemporary issues with sensitivity and depth. These shows are not only awe-inspiring but also thought-provoking, making my anticipation for their performance all the more heightened.
A Broadway Crucible
Broadway continues to be a crucible for me. Whether it's the magic of Cats or the transformational power of Kinky Boots, each show leaves me with a new perspective and an enhanced appreciation of theater's unique magic. The world of Broadway is a world of endless discovery, and I look forward to each new show with bated breath.
