Did Anything Odd and Abnormal Happen to People Who Discovered the Mummy Tombs in Egypt?
One of the most mysterious questions in the history of archeology is whether anything special or odd occurred to those who discovered the mummy tombs in Egypt. But to cut a long story short, the answer is a resounding No!
The Myth of the Mummy’s Curse
The myth of the mummy’s curse, also known as the “Curse of King Tut,” began in a time when news and speculation spread like wildfire. It all started with the accidental discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb by the British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. Carter led a mission of 26 people, and his sponsor, Sir George Carnavon, accompanied him, leading to global fascination and excitement.
The Incident That Prompted Warnings
A small incident immediately drew the attention of Mary Corelli, a writer of gothic and fantasy novels. Following the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, a cobra ate Carter’s canary on the very day of the discovery. Corelli wrote a letter to the New York World magazine, claiming she had warned Sir Carnavon of an impending “punishment” for disturbing Egyptian tombs. She cited an ancient book about poisons left in the tombs after burials.
The Real Truth Behind the Legend
When Sir Carnavon died at the age of 56 a few weeks later, the legend of the mummy’s curse was born. Newspapers and articles filled with sensationalized stories and unverified information fueled the myth. However, the truth is far less dramatic. Out of the 26 members of the mission, only six died in the subsequent 10 years, and Howard Carter himself passed away 17 years later at the age of 64. His epitaph on his grave reads:
May your spirit live, may you spend millions of years, you who loves Thebes, sitting with your face to the north wind, your eyes beholding happiness. A quotation for wishing a cup of Tutankhamun. Does he seem frightened by the “disturbed” Pharaoh? No, then why be you?
The Cautionary Note on Bacterial Contamination
It is true that Mary’s book had a point. Many bacteria are found in tombs sealed for long periods, and they can indeed cause diseases. However, this does not align with the mysterious and haunting stories of curses that developed around these tombs.
The incident of the canary leads to a not-so-mystical bacteria theory rather than a supernatural curse. The truth is that the bacteria and other microorganisms present in the tomb environment are a more plausible explanation for any health-related issues that might occur.
Why Not Mark These Locations as Untouchable Historical Sacred Monuments?
One wonders why these archaeological sites are not marked as untouchable historical and sacred monuments, like the unknown graves of the Confederates in various states such as Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Is there a genuine reason why these locations remain vulnerable to such disrespectful activities?
Respecting the Dead
The remains of those who are buried in these ancient tombs should be left alone to rest in peace. It is not respectful to plunder graves and disregard the spiritual remains of those who have passed. Many people, including archaeologists, were overcome with thoughts of greed and personal gain, leading to the desecration of these sacred sites.
Compensation and Historical Discovery
There are reasonable arguments for why historical discovery is important. However, after how many years is it acceptable to continue desecrating graves? Is science, with its modern advancements, still in need of uncovering more remains? Is it fair to claim that these ancient tombs still hold valuable scientific information when, in reality, the common people and archaeologists alike have grown more greedy and disrespectful?
It is essential to strike a balance between the historical value of these sites and the respect due to the dead. The remains should be returned to their resting places, and compensation should be made for such disrespectful and ignorant actions. The cities and communities that suffered due to historical excavation deserve recognition and respects instead of continued desecration.
Karma and the Ripple Effect
Much like the biblical stories of divine retribution, the actions of those who desecrate graves have a ripple effect. The abnormal greed that corrupted the grave robbers is likely to have brought about karmic consequences, leading to further destruction and disrespect towards the deceased.
May the spirits of those who have been disturbed find comfort and rest, free from the same disrespect they faced during their lifetimes. In spiritual energy form, they should be neither created nor destroyed, but transformed and transferred to a state of peace and tranquility.
