Maintaining Calm and Confidence in Drumming: Tips for Better Performance
Dealing with the challenge of staying composed and in control while playing the drums can be daunting. As performers, we often find ourselves either overthinking and tightening up or loosening up too much. Here are some proven strategies to help you stay calm and in charge while you play, backed by insights from fellow drummers and experts in the field.
Practice, Practice, Practice
The more you practice, the better you will get. Familiarity and confidence in your material are key. When you're playing in a band, focus on the other instruments, especially the bass. Find the groove and flow with it. Remember, the best reason to perform is to enjoy what you're doing. Confidence tends to come from internal satisfaction, and sharing that with others creates a validating circle.
Experience Matters
Playing in public, whether at a church or a regular venue, can be incredibly beneficial. The more experience you gain, the better you will handle the nerves and adrenaline that come with performing. Consistent exposure to public performance helps settle your mind and emotions, making it easier to handle the pressures of being in the spotlight.
Master Your Breathing
One trick that many drummers find helpful is maintaining a relaxed and consistent breathing pattern. Overthinking can lead to shallow or erratic breathing. I had to learn to relax and breathe naturally. It's a crucial skill that can stabilize your performance and help you stay connected to the music rather than the stress of the moment.
Imagining Ideal Performance
As an introvert, I understand the struggle of translating solo skills into live performances. I found that the mental state I was in alone was very different from the one I was in when performing. A change in mental/emotional 'vibration' makes it difficult to access the information and skills needed for a calm and confident performance. A strategy that worked for me was visualizing the performance in detailed scenes in my imagination.
Imagining the Performance: A Step-by-Step Guide
1. Retreat to a Private Space: Find a comfortable and quiet space where you can unwind and let go of any tension.
2. Get into the Right State: Allow your muscles to relax and breathing to become natural and easy. Immerse yourself in the experience.
3. Visualize the Performance: Imagine yourself playing one of the songs on your list. Visualize the venue, the band, and the audience supporting you. Feel confident and relaxed. Hear the music fitting together beautifully and imagine the groove and pocket.
4. Replay the Performance: Play through the real-life scenario of the song. Hear every part, fit together, and feel the sync with your band. Let yourself be calm and enjoy the act of playing.
5. End with Accomplishment and Appreciation: Visualize the end of the song and the sense of accomplishment. Allow yourself to be appreciated and enjoy the performance.
6. Repeat and Reflect: Repeat this mental movie every night as you drift off to sleep for a few days to a week. Reflect on your performance and let it become second nature.
By incorporating these techniques, you can train your mind to stay calm and confident, even when faced with the pressures of public performance. Remember, the key is consistent practice and visualization.
