The Perception of Rigging in the JYP A2K Audition
Introduction:
As someone in the industry, I have to be real: the survival show A2K feels rigged, and I will explain why. This opinion is strictly mine, and I have some disclaimers and specific points that back up my perspective.
Red Flags and Specific Instances
The Case of Mischa:
One of my first red flags with the survival show was when Mischa, the first person who didn't make it to Korea, was not invited back despite having more than one stone and the last stone opportunity. This omission was quite obvious. However, when Melissa withdrew, I expected Mischa to be brought back for more intensive training. JYP’s decision to keep Mischa out rather than bringing her back highlights a potential bias or strategic decision-making process.
Individual Evaluation Rankings:
More evidence of potential rigging came during the “individual evaluation rankings” episode. During the episode titled “Korean Boot Camp Begins,” trainees were required to either sing, dance, or do both. Key trainees like Kaylee, Kendall, Christina, Gina, Camila, Yuna, Savanna, and Lexus displayed impressive performances. However, there is one notable exception: KG, who only sang. Despite this, KG managed to rank highly even when she did not dance, which is quite telling.
Disagreements with Rankings
KG's Ranking:
KG's ranking as a top 3 performer is notably surprising to me, especially considering her performance where she only sang. In contrast, other trainees like Savanna, Camila, and Kendall displayed more impressive skills. Savanna’s acrobatic and complex choreography by StrayKids' Thunderous whilst singing, and Camila’s multiple hard high notes by Ariana Grande, are significant achievements that should have influenced the rankings significantly.
Kendall's Placement:
Kendall’s ranking as the second best performer is also questionable, given her singing skills. Kaylee managed to rank fourth, which might be a better reflection of her capability considering her lack of focus on dancing. Meanwhile, Camila's high notes and extensive dance sequences should have placed her at the top of the rankings, rather than second.
Consistency in Tangible Performances:
Consistenency and tangible skills are crucial in any entertainment industry, and these are the factors that should have guided the rankings. For example, Savanna's technical prowess and Camila's impressive vocal abilities are not adequately represented in their rankings.
Conclusion and Call to Action
In conclusion, there are several instances that suggest the possibility of rigging in the JYP A2K audition process. This is not to say there are no fair and talented trainees; it is merely a matter of transparency and clear evaluation criteria. Our community can support fair practices by giving this matter the attention it deserves and demanding transparency from JYP.
