Is Disco Music Making a Comeback in the 2020s?
Night Fever, No Doctor, just got the sweats. Yes, disco music has seen a resurgence in popularity during the 2020s, and this revival is influenced by several factors.
Nostalgia: A Strong Force
The late 2010s and 2020s have stirred a wave of nostalgia among both artists and listeners. The vibrant sound and culture of the disco era evoke a sense of bygone days, making them appealing once again. For many, disco is a soundtrack to happy memories and a reminder of a time filled with joy and dance.
Modern Artists Embracing Disco Sounds
Contemporary artists like Dua Lipa, Bruno Mars, and The Weeknd have incorporated disco elements into their music, blending classic sounds with modern production techniques. One notable example is Dua Lipa's album
Future Nostalgia, which features tracks that pay homage to the disco era. These modern incorporations have helped bring disco back into the mainstream, appealing to a new generation of listeners.
Cultural Movements and Social Media
Additionally, the rise of inclusive and celebratory social movements has contributed to the disco revival. Disco is often associated with joy, freedom, and community, making it a symbol of acceptance and celebration. Platforms like TikTok have played a significant role in popularizing disco tracks, with users creating dance challenges and trends around classic disco songs and modern tracks that draw on the genre.
The 2020s: A Humorous Look at the Future
However, the optimism about the disco revival is tempered by the reality of the times. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person disco dance social events have largely been suspended until June 2021 and are expected to fully resume in January 2022. Discos were, and still are, places of inclusivity where people from all walks of life could come together to dance and celebrate. Today, we find ourselves living in a world that is humorless and judgmental, where progress and acceptance are often met with intolerance and judgment.
The Future of Disco
Back in the 1980s, disco music celebrated the joy of living, loving, and laughing. It celebrated beauty in all forms and fostered an atmosphere of inclusivity. However, in today's society, where people who consider themselves tolerant and accepting are acting violently intolerant and irrational, disco events would likely be met with resistance.
Given these circumstances, it is unlikely that disco will make a substantial comeback in the near future. Moreover, a reinvention of disco in the style of the past seems highly improbable. The world has been made ugly, and the energy required to recreate the spirit and inclusivity of disco in a current context may be too great. Therefore, I do not see disco music making a significant comeback or a successful reinvention for a very long time.
Nevertheless, the spirit of disco lives on in modern music and through nostalgic memories. As the world works towards a more accepting and inclusive future, perhaps the time for a true disco revival will come again.
