Intriguing Stories and Baffling Experiences with Mahaperiyava

The experiences of devotees with the Late 68th Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Swami, widely known as Mahaperiyava, have been nothing short of miraculous. Many stories about Mahaperiyava are both intriguing and baffling, showcasing his divinity and spiritual acumen.

Personal Encounters and Testimonies

I had the good fortune of seeing Mahaperiyava twice when I was young. Firstly, at the Kanchi Mutt (monastery) and secondly, at Tenambakkam during the consecration (Kumbabhishekam) of a Shiva temple. These experiences were profound, and I feel fortunate to have been part of them. Here is a video where the current Jeeyar (successor) of the Ahobila Mutt narrates about Mahaperiyava. The video sheds light on the unique bond between Mahaperiyava and the Jeeyar Swami, which transcends doctrinal differences.

Incidents of Devotion and Wisdom

One of the most remarkable stories about Mahaperiyava centers on his early days as the head of the Kanchi Kama Koti Mutt. Mahaperiyava ascended to this position at the tender age of 12, a time when these positions required the mastery of all Vedic scriptures and traditions. It is said that the original name of Mahaperiyava was Swaminathan, but he was installed as the head of the mutt based on his extraordinary spiritual and academic prowess.

During his formative years, Mahaperiyava was tutored by a renowned guru who hailed from Kumbakonam and would teach the scriptures near the banks of the Kaveri River. One day, during class, Mahaperiyava was found playing with sands and stones near the river. Initially, his guru was unmoved but, upon repeating his admonishment the next day, he was unable to maintain his composure due to Mahaperiyava's young age. The guru decided to leave the mutt, stating he could no longer teach a child who did not seem to be paying attention.

However, to the guru's astonishment, Mahaperiyava stated, 'I was playing with the sand, but also listening to your classes the whole time.' The guru, intrigued, asked Mahaperiyava to recite the lessons he had learned the previous day, which Mahaperiyava did with ease and even recited parts of the scriptures that were yet to be taught. This incident left the guru speechless, and he fell to Mahaperiyava's feet, apologizing profusely and asking for permission to leave. The guru came to the alarming conclusion that Mahaperiyava must be a reincarnation of Adi Sankara, a belief reinforced by the guru's own progress and knowledge acquisition under Mahaperiyava's tutelage.

Conclusion and Devotion

These incidents, deeply rooted in devotion and spirituality, are a testament to the extraordinary nature of Mahaperiyava. They reflect his profound knowledge and spiritual wisdom, making my encounters with him even more meaningful. Although I regret not being able to see him more, I am comforted by the belief that Paramacharya is always with me, guiding and protecting me.
