One of the most popular methods is Apapanasati, which involves focusing on the breath. In Pali language, this is called Apapanasati. Another method involves focusing on a candle flame, a practice known as Casina Vipassana. This method can also involve focusing on the earth element, water element, or wind element.
Color Casina is another method where one focuses on color. For those seeking a more challenging practice, there is also a method involving the contemplation of a dead body at different stages of decomposition. This was a traditional method in ancient India but can be quite intense and is not strongly recommended. This practice involves meditating in the cemetery for about three months, observing the stages of decomposition from a newly dead body to a white dust. However, this method is quite strenuous and challenging.
Easier and Beneficial Methods for Inner Peace
There are more accessible methods for achieving inner peace, such as the “Four Brahma Viharas”, which include loving-kindness (Metta) meditation. In this practice, one radiates thoughts of loving kindness to all directions and people, such as “May all beings in all directions be well and be happy.” Another method involves radiating thoughts of compassion to all in all directions.
Ultimately, there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to achieving inner peace through meditation. Many teachers and Gurus, including the legendary Gotama Buddha, have taught the 40 methods of concentration meditation. It’s important to remember that there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Based on your individual temperament and inclination, you can try different methods and find the one that suits you best.
