How to Make Animal Balloons: A Simple and Fun Activity for Kids
Strangely enough, my kid received a kit from a birthday party that included balloons and detailed instructions. Making balloon animals is surprisingly easy, and in no time you'll be blow up long, skinny balloons and twisting them into various animal shapes. This activity is a great way to engage kids or family members who are interested in entertaining themselves or others on special occasions. It's definitely worth the small investment.
Materials Needed to Make Balloon Animals
To get started, you will need the following materials:
Balloons: You can use almost any type of balloon, but the most commonly used for basic balloon twisting are 260 balloons, which are 2 inches in diameter and 60 inches long when fully inflated. Other popular types include 160s, 350s, and 645s, as well as round balloons in 5, 9, and 12 inches, and bee body and heart-shaped balloons. Balloon Pump: An optional but highly recommended tool that makes inflating the balloons much easier and quicker.Basic Techniques for Twisting Balloons
The first thing to remember is that as you twist a balloon, the air you displace must go somewhere, typically further down the balloon. Inflate your balloon to 2/3 of its maximum size for most basic single-ballooon animals. For more complex designs, you might only inflate it by half. Before tying the nozzle, let a little air out to reduce pressure and prevent the balloon from popping during twisting. Squeeze each new section before starting the next twist to maintain proper pressure.
Common Balloon Twists
Basic Twist: Create a bubble of the desired length by twisting the balloon. This twist won't hold on its own and will untwist if you release one end of the balloon. Lock Twist: Take two basic twists and twist them together so they don't come undone. Practice by making 3 basic twists with bubbles of the same length, folding the balloon over and twisting the first and last basic twist together. Petal Twist: This is a special lock twist where you twist a basic twist into the next basic twist, creating a bubble with a looped or flower petal shape. Pinch Twist: Also known as the ear twist, this is achieved by making a tiny petal twist in a smaller bubble by pinching and spinning it around itself. The result looks like a little ear.Detailed Steps to Make a Balloon Dog
The classic balloon dog is an excellent starting point for beginners. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Create a bubble about 3 to 4 inches long using a basic twist. Repeat to make two more bubbles of the same length. Lock twist the first and third bubbles together to form the head, with the nozzle acting as the nose and two ears. To make the front and back legs, perform another basic twist and lock twist, placing them farther down the balloon. To form the body, do three more basic twists, lock the first and third of these together, and use the remaining balloon to make a tail.Further Learning and Inspiration
