Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: The Overused Villain Trope That Cringes

What scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 made you cringe? Let me start by saying I enjoyed the movie as a whole. It was fun.

There are lots of scenes that shouldn't have worked but they did because come on… you're just there to turn off your brain, munch popcorn, and enjoy the over-the-top action sequences. But the one thing that gets me every time... the one thing that always makes me roll my eyes is the dance-off scene at the end.

The Dance-Off Scene That Shirks Expectations

Yes, I’m piling on. I know. It’s not the dance-off itself that bothers me. It’s the abuse of an all-too-common trope in movies like this. You have this powerful villain who has spent the whole movie procuring an unstoppable super-weapon. He’s finally in a position to use it and complete his mission— but instead of just doing the thing he’s been trying to do the entire movie, he stops to ask Quill what he’s up to.

Why, you might ask? Why does it matter? You’re about to utterly destroy him. Who freaking cares what he’s doing? I hate it when a villain becomes a total moron at the end of the movie just so the hero can defeat him. It’s lazy writing.

Like I said, I enjoyed the movie as a whole. I just wish they’d come up with a way to end it that didn’t involve Ronan losing sight of everything he’d been trying to do just for a cheap laugh.

Other Highlights and Comparisons

The dance-off scene with Star-Lord. Ugh! The rest of the movie is very good and close to the Dan Abnett Guardians of the Galaxy comic series from the late 2000s. The characters are not the same, but the themes, depictions, and situations are pretty close to the introduction of this batch of Guardians in Annihilation: Conquest.

I wish they had been able to incorporate their cool uniforms from this series a bit but maybe some day they will. They had a nice blue and gold and then black and gold sort of uniform throughout the group, and it looks very nice and gives them a sense of team unity. Star Lord’s original uniform from this series looks more official like a real space soldier rather than space slob.

Oh well! I actually like parts of Vol. 2 a lot better than Vol. 1. I think Star Lord’s getting to be a better character in the MCU. Even though he kind of messed up the battle on Titan where they almost had the gauntlet off Thanos, his emotions in the scene were real. Hopefully they can bring Adam Warlock into the bunch and he can complicate things.

Conclusion

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had its share of memorable moments, one scene in particular left a sour taste in my mouth. The dance-off between Ronan and Star-Lord might be fun to watch, but it’s an unfortunate nod to lazy storytelling techniques that, unfortunately, still manage to irritate viewers. Nevertheless, the film remains a fun and engaging soundtrack to some great popcorn-munching moments.
