Fresh and Fun Ways to Keep a Long Distance Relationship Thriving
When I first met my husband, he lived in the UK and I was in the US. The internet was different back then, but we came up with a creative way to stay connected and make our long distance relationship fresh and fun. We sent each other a parcel with a map book and envelopes, a tradition that brought us closer together and made us learn about each other's lives in unique ways.
Engaging Activities and Surprises
Our parcel included 12 red, 12 green, and 12 white envelopes. The red envelopes had locations for us to find, such as "JB's Club Castlegate." The green envelopes contained puzzles that often required us to look up information in the map book. The white envelopes held smaller envelopes with puzzles, comic strips, "thoughts for the day," and small items from the local newspaper. These surprises were a great way to expand our knowledge about each other's lives and our surroundings.
Use the Internet for Fun and Connection
Instead of snail mail, you can now use the internet to keep in touch and share experiences. For instance, you can use Board Game Arena to play games together or platforms like Steam to play video games. For video calls, Discord offers a Movie Night feature where you can chat and watch a movie together. Virtual classes, such as cooking classes or dance workshops, can also help you both learn new skills and bond.
Create Special Moments Together
Surprise your partner with restaurant orders from places you both love. Order the food and have a video call where you can enjoy your meal together. This not only adds a touch of romance but also allows you to explore new culinary experiences from a distance.
Grow Together in Various Domains
Engaging in activities that help you learn about each other's hobbies and interests is crucial. Discuss the bands you've attended, share gig guides, and local treats. Making small handmade gifts, like an afghan, can show the effort you put into making your relationship special. By doing things that bring you closer, you prepare for an eventual in-person relationship and find common ground in various aspects of life.
The key to a successful long distance relationship is the effort you put in to keep the spark alive. It's about making the distance work for you and finding ways to stay connected and engaged. Even though physical interaction is limited, creative and thoughtful gestures can help maintain a strong bond.
