From a Book Nerd to a Movie Buff: My Movie Watching Habits
Have you ever wondered how often people watch new movies, especially when they prioritize watching in theaters versus streaming platforms like Netflix or Hulu? I've always been on the opposite end of the standard demographic. I watch an average of 2-5 movies a week, a habit that started in high school and has only grown stronger over the years. So, let’s dive into my love for films, my viewing habits, and my thoughts on different platforms.
My Favorite Movies and Theaters
When it comes to movies, I have a definite preference for big studio films, particularly those that are 3D, event movies (treated like tentpoles in the industry), or what I lovingly call the “Ultimate Movie-Going Experience.” Recently, I saw the 2012 movie Argo at a very nice theater, sipping a delightful glass of pinot noir and munching on some yumluciously satisfying mozzarella sticks and brownies with ice cream. For documentaries and independent films, I either head to arthouse theaters or stream them on Netflix, which has become my go-to platform for both movies and TV shows.
When I’m not in the mood for these special experiences, I opt for streaming via Netflix, Hulu, or AppleTV. Every now and then, I see something at private or premiere screenings through friends in the industry. Right now, I’m in the middle of a Columbo marathon, watching Johnny Cash, Robert Culp, and William Shatner on Netflix. No, I don’t think anyone will be convinced, but I love this stuff!
Converting to Streaming
When it comes to streaming, I have a love-hate relationship. In the past, I enjoyed the convenience of being able to watch almost anything on demand, but then the internet would crash too often for my liking. Thankfully, I’ve since ditched my cable and direct TV, streaming is now my go-to for live viewing, especially at bars, friends' homes, or local theaters where I can catch someone’s live stream.
Before going fully digital, I rented films from the local library. I remember those Fridays, when I could rent 6-7 movies and snack my way through them. Now, with the ability to convert DVDs and Blu-rays to digital copies, the majority of my movies and TV shows are accessed via my hard drive. This has become an ultimate convenience for me, as I can easily access and consume my collections anytime, anywhere.
TV Shows and Time of Year
My viewing habits certainly change with the seasons. In the summer, I rarely hit the theaters because of the supply of mediocre movies. However, during Oscar season, I go at least twice a week, eager to see the latest contenders. I don’t watch many films on cable or TV, but during Christmas, there’s always something worth catching. With the advent of hard drives, I may eventually phase out cable or TV for live viewing.
For streaming, the internet crashes remain a persistent issue. However, the convenience of my hard drive allows me to binge-watch unlimited amounts of content, whether it’s my favorite detective stories or crime series. Recently, I finished a marathon of Columbo, and I’m currently engrossed in a Murder She Wrote marathon on Netflix. Yes, it’s true - I have a thing for homicides and detective stories, and I need something to keep me occupied while waiting for the next season of Sherlock and Canada’s Murdoch Mysteries.
Conclusion
So there you have it, my unique movie watching habits. From the local library to the latest streaming platforms, I love discovering new films and experiencing the thrill of the movie theater. Whether it’s a big studio 3D event or a niche indie documentary, the joy of watching movies keeps me coming back for more. Stay tuned for more insights into the wonderful world of film and streaming!
