Exploring the Roles of K-pop Idols: The Case of Blackpink

As a long-time ARMY and fan of K-pop, the discussion about whether Blackpink leans more towards being influencers or models often stirs up strong opinions. While it's perfectly valid to have different viewpoints, it’s important to consider the multifaceted roles these idols undertake to bring their music and image to the world.

A Balanced Perspective

As someone who has streamed LALISA and introduced Blackpink to my sister, I hold a unique perspective. It might seem biased to some, but here's my take on the matter. When I say that Blackpink performs more solo content, it doesn’t diminish their musical talent or impact in the K-pop industry. The group did not disband after their training years, so dedicating time to solo projects is a logical choice given their trainee background and development.

Effort and Recognition

It's true that there is a lot of criticism directed at Blackpink for the lack of new content, but it’s essential to recognize the extensive work they and their label (YG Entertainment) put in. Training for six years only to release under 60 songs in five years is a significant commitment without the corresponding industry reward. While YG Entertainment aims to balance the girls' workload, the criticism still resonates. These idols have a lot to show for their hard work, and they deserve appropriate recognition for their efforts.

Subjective Opinions and Personal Insights

Opinions on Blackpink and its members can vary widely. Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé each bring unique strengths and vulnerabilities to the group. Let's break down the perspectives on each member:

Jennie

I don't see Jennie as a K-pop idol in the same traditional sense. Her stage charisma has waned somewhat in recent times, particularly during the 'LoveSick Girls' era. Jisoo, too, has often been seen as lacking in the K-pop industry, with her vocals initially not gaining much approval. However, she has since developed a following that appreciates her hard work and growth. In comparison to other models-turned-entertainers, Jisoo has always been more about fashion rather than social media influence.

Jisoo

Jisoo is not as admired for her fashion as she is for her overall image. Once I saw her, I couldn't help but think she might be a fashion icon or social media influencer. While her voice is passable, I feel it's sometimes strained. However, her hard work in modeling could potentially make her one of the top-paid models. If she channels that same dedication into her music career, she could undoubtedly achieve significant success.

Lisa

Lisa shines more in her rapping and dancing. She exudes passion for these aspects of her art, which makes her stand out. While her visuals are strong, I believe she could focus more on her core talents to elevate her performances. Her recent focus on flaunting her legs has somewhat disappointed fans. While her passion for dancing remains, it seems like her energies are being directed towards showcasing herself, at the expense of her skills. Seulgi, on the other hand, is a standout dancer who prioritizes her talent over other distractions.

Rosé

Rosé is the most focused member of the group. She genuinely appears interested in her role, and this is one of the reasons I hold her in high regard. However, her visual appeal cannot be understated, as it contributes to the overall group image and impact.

Each of Blackpink's members has a unique place within the group and the industry. The debate about their roles as idols, models, or influencers is interesting and valid, but it’s crucial to approach it with an understanding of the multifaceted roles idols play in K-pop.
