Essex: Beyond the Reality TV Stereotypes

Many might believe that Essex is only defined by the reality TV programs that showcase a particular lifestyle. However, it is far from the only way. The reality is, the county of Essex is much broader and rich in history, culture, and beauty.

Is Essex the Only Way?

Not really. The famous British song by Yazz, 'leanorrt is Up,' actually tells us that the way is up. This means that Essex, just like any other place, has the potential for growth and positivity.

As a proud Essex boy, I have lived, studied, and worked here all my life. Essex was home from 1994, and I had the incredible privilege of being the resident DJ at two of the most famous clubs in the county: Dukes in Chelmsford and Tots in Southend on Sea. The dance, Brit pop, jungle, house, garage, and trance scenes of the 90s and 00s were truly remarkable.

The Reality TV Myth

What you see on television is a far cry from the reality of Essex. These programs often sensationalize and stereotype the inhabitants of the county. If such shows had been around in the 80s and 90s, it would have showcased a similar dynamic, with people still donning stilettos and grandad shirts, but driving their XR3i's around the 'strip.'

While some people might portray Essex as a place only defined by certain stereotypes, the truth is quite different. The county is filled with amazing places, a rich history, and a vibrant culture. It is also home to the longest pleasure pier in the world, Colchester, which is the oldest town in England, and some of the best fish and chips you can find!

Colchester, mentioned as the oldest town in England, has roots dating back to AD79. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the county. Essex has a diverse range of notable people who have made significant contributions to art, science, and culture.

From these contributions to the many charming towns and the rich historical sites, it is clear that Essex is much more than what you see on the TV. It is a remarkable and beautiful county, and I am proud to call it home.
