Engaging Video Games with a Violent Yet Entertaining Edge
While some video games are universally celebrated for their engaging gameplay, others stand out for their unique blend of violence and entertainment. These games capture the violence factor in a way that makes the experience both thrilling and enjoyable. In this article, we’ll explore some notable video games that, despite their violent themes, provide an entertaining and memorable experience.
Mortal Kombat and God of War: A Violent Yet Enjoyable Journey
One of the first “violent” games I ever played was Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. These games were dramatically different from what I was accustomed to, with a mix of violent action and entertainment. While many players might find certain violent scenes off-putting, the games are undeniably well-made and fun to play. The Mortal Kombat series includes gruesome and stylized fatalities, but the overall enjoyment remains intact.
Similarly, the God of War series is renowned for its gory and violent content. I’ve never truly enjoyed some of the more graphic aspects of the series, but I have to acknowledge that the games are deeply well-crafted and compelling. The violent scenes are spectacularly executed, making each combat scene an engaging spectacle. Despite the visceral and realistic violence, the games provide an enjoyable and thrilling experience.
Party Hard: A Blend of Violence and Humor
Party Hard is a game that offers a unique blend of violence and humor. Unlike many games that focus solely on violent action, Party Hard takes a more cerebral approach. The goal is to kill everyone at a party without getting caught, but the game is filled with lots of humor as well. Each level includes a power-up that can turn the tide of the game, such as a zombie apocalypse. The gameplay is a mix of strategic puzzle-solving and visceral action, making it both challenging and entertaining.
One particularly enjoyable aspect of the game is its zany and over-the-top power-ups. From zombies to chainsaws, each power-up adds an extra layer of fun and chaos. The game’s humorous and satirical tone makes the violent elements more palatable, turning what could be a daunting task into an adventure.
Smash TV: A Violent Game Show with a Twisted Plot
Smash TV takes the concept of a violent game show and runs with it. The game is designed in the same vein as The Running Man, where contestants are forced to participate in hyper-violent games. However, unlike The Running Man, the contestants and the game are kept secret, adding an element of suspense and intrigue.
The gameplay in Smash TV is straightforward, using the same control scheme as Robotron 2084: move the left stick to navigate and shoot using the right stick. The face buttons in the Super Nintendo version allow for more precise shooting, but the Nintendo version offers two control options: using a second joystick for aiming or a combination of moves and aiming. This adds an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay, making it engaging and challenging.
Grand Theft Auto: From Fun to Realism
Grand Theft Auto (GTA) titles have always been a mix of violence and fun. The original GTA I and GTA II London were particularly memorable for their cartoony violence and catchy soundtracks. The Craig Conner score in GTA I and the classic ’60s pop music in GTA London added an extra layer of enjoyment to the gameplay. The top-down perspective in these games made them fun and engaging, even with the cartoony violence.
As the series progressed, the realism increased, and the games became more violent and realistic. However, the GTA III and GTA SA still managed to maintain an element of fun, with great character work and storylines. The Samuel L. Jackson and James Woods voice acting added a fun and memorable element to the game, but the increased realism also made the violence more harsh and unsettling.
Ultimately, the GTA IV was too realistic for my taste, and I couldn’t bring myself to purchase it. While the series evolved into a more mature and realistic experience, the loss of the cartoony and playful elements made the games less enjoyable for me.
The Enjoyment of Violent Games
For many players, the enjoyment of violent games lies in the entertainment factor rather than the real-world consequences. While violent scenes can be shocking or off-putting, the way they are presented in games can make them more palatable and fun. Whether it’s through hilarious power-ups, clever storylines, or top-notch voice acting, the right blend of violence and entertainment can create an immersive and enjoyable experience.
At the end of the day, the enjoyment of violent games comes down to personal preference. While some players find enjoyment in the gory and realistic violence, others prefer the cartoony and playful elements. The key is to find a balance that resonates with the player’s sense of enjoyment.
