Discovering BTS: A Journey into K-Pop Magic
BTS, or Bangtan Sonyeondan, is a South Korean boy band that debuted in 2013. Initially gaining attention through their unique blend of K-pop and addressing themes like mental health, self-love, and societal issues, they have since built a dedicated fan base known as ARMY. Their international breakthrough came with hits like Boy With Luv and Spring Day.
Initial Exposure
My sister was the one who introduced me to BTS. She would set up the downstairs TV in her room and pull me in to watch their performances on Blood Sweat and Tears or when they were at award shows on TV. At first, I found it pretty weird and thought a lot of the K-pop stereotypes applied. However, my love for BTS grew over time.
Personal Journey
Whenever I saw my classmates fangirl over BTS, I would question why they liked them so much. I thought, “Seriously that guy?”, referring to Jimin, as I saw him gushing over a picture. Eventually, after watching their latest release, Boy With Luv, I started to understand their appeal. I drew pictures of individual band members and fell even more in love with them. The Danger era pictures I kept in my purse for over a year became a source of comfort as I slowly became an ARMY.
Engaging with the Band
Through watching BTS funny moments, I discovered J-Hope's sense of humor and the playful bickering between the members. One video, featuring Worldwide Handsome Jin, made me 'crying laughing.' His fun and chaotic moments, such as playing a flute from his nose and engaging in playful bickering with Jungkook, made me fall deeper in love with the group.
How BTS Reached Me
Reflecting on how BTS entered my life, it seems almost fated. After my two favorite bands disbanded, BTS remained a constant presence. They taught me to be patient and wait for their return, becoming an integral part of my life.
