Is it Possible to Determine the Existence of Something Supernatural without Scientific Proof?
It is not possible to determine if ANYTHING exists without credible evidence that it does. Science, a credible realm of inquiry, relies on experimentation and observation within the physical universe. A higher power, by definition, might exist outside the realm of science. As such, the existence of a higher power, if one subscribes to such a belief, cannot be scientifically proven.
Commonly, Newtonian science and traditional scientific methods fall short in addressing such issues because they would be too primitive when considering spiritual and metaphysical questions. Even so, when religious texts and traditions are consulted, they offer narratives, teachings, rituals, and practices that provide frameworks for understanding and experiencing a higher power. For believers, these texts and traditions often serve as sources of guidance, inspiration, and spiritual insight.
It is indeed possible to determine the existence of a higher power without scientific proof. I, as one raised in a religion and as a Believer in God, find no need to determine the existence of a higher power or deity solely based on scientific evidence. For me, a rational and logical approach combined with faith is sufficient. It is also required because God is beyond this physical world and time and space. Therefore, God can only be understood by indirect means such as logical and spiritual proofs.
It is essential to recognize that one can use faith and wisdom to approach such questions. For someone who is a Baha’i and a follower of Baha’u’llah, the Prophet-Founder of the Bahá’í Faith, the belief in the existence of a higher power is not contingent upon scientific proof. As a Baha’i, I believe that scientific advancements do not negate the possibility of a higher power but rather complement and expand our understanding of the universe.
Then one might ask, why doesn’t science address this crucial question as well? One can readily understand and acknowledge that something cannot come from nothing, a concept known as the ontological problem. This is a fundamental question that challenges our understanding of the origins of the universe. However, current quantum physics and the Big Bang theory don’t provide answers to the origin of the universe, nor do they explain how something can come from nothing.
For those who seek to understand the existence of a higher power through science and logic, the question remains unanswered. As for me, the importance of logic and reason in faith lies in recognizing that the universe, as we know it, was created through a process that may be beyond scientific explanation. The answer to the question of how the universe came to exist might lie in the realm of spontaneous generation, an idea that something can arise from nothing, but scientifically and logically, it is challenging to prove. Nonetheless, this concept remains a fundamental part of philosophical and theological discourse.
In conclusion, the existence of something supernatural, particularly a higher power, can be determined through faith, logic, and spiritual proofs, rather than solely through scientific proof. For those who believe, the compatibility between faith and reason provides a harmonious framework for understanding the universe and its mysteries.
