Chasing the Sun: Why I Reluctantly Embraced Snow-Free Living
Would you like to live where there is always snow? Absolutely not!!
For many, the allure of perpetual snow and cold weather is a tantalizing dream. However, my decision to reside permanently in Florida has led me to reflect on the realities of living in such environments. The tropics and subtropics beckon, with their year-round warmth and vibrant landscapes. Complaining about the cold winter just doesn’t cut it when you can change your reality.
Why I Chose Florida
Flipping the script, I made a conscious choice to relocate to Florida. The power of the human mind to transform one's reality cannot be overstated. Prior to 2017, my life in Ohio entailed enduring the four seasons, complete with bitter winters. However, this was not without its challenges. Constant snow shoveling, icy scraping, battling the flu, and the sheer effort required to pry doors open—from midwinter to spring—made every practical daily activity a struggle.
The Dangers of Snowy Climates
Living in snowy climates carries inherent risks. Accidents, including car crashes and plane crashes, are all too common. A memorable example is Air Florida Flight 90, which illustrates the extreme perils of snowy conditions. The mountainsides and glaciers in regions like Northern Canada, Alaska, and the mountainous areas of the Rockies offer similar challenges. Antarctica, too, holds the potential, albeit with stringent qualifications.
The Consequences of Living in a Frigid Climate
Snowy environments are not for the faint of heart. Imagine driving with the windows down, always bundled in layers, and always sniffling due to the cold. Driving conditions are often unfavorable and comfort is a rare commodity. Constantly layering up to remain warm is not a lifestyle I desire. The sparsely populated nature of these regions is a testament to their harshness.
Engineering and Snow
As an engineer with skills in demand, I have the freedom to work anywhere. My choice to live in a snowy climate leverages this strength. A life without snow, some might argue, lacks something essential. Yet, I find immense satisfaction and connection to the area, particularly its local farm products, wine, maple syrup, and the overall community. My winter snowfall totals from previous years paint a picture of resilience and adaptation. Last year, I experienced 250 inches of snow, and this year, just under 35 inches.
A Life Well-Lived
While many might struggle with extreme snowfall, I take these conditions in stride. Local road crews keep the highways passable within four hours of the snowfall stopping. No matter how much snow falls, my appreciation for the area remains unwavering, from the perpetual warmth to the rich local culture and food. This is a choice I do not regret.
