My Personal Journey in Communication Studies
For a time, I worked as an advertising copywriter, where I honed my skills in crafting compelling narratives for displays and direct ads. Although I am now a happy retiree, my journey has been filled with diverse experiences.
I am currently working as a Public Relations and Social Media Manager in an Advertising, Marketing, and Public Relations agency. My tasks include formulating communication strategies for clients, writing press releases, editorials, and speeches, organizing events, media monitoring, and media relations. Additionally, I do part-time lecturing at a local university, where I teach classes for a postgraduate diploma in public relations.
Schooling in media and communications was both a leap of faith and a strategic move. I pursued my Master of Arts in Media and Communications because I was uncertain about my career direction immediately after college. Earning a Master's degree while staying engaged in my studies and interests was a valuable step. I expanded my horizons by working as a freelance writer, interning at a talent agency, and serving as a youth mentor and university front desk staff. I emerged from the program with a robust resume and a Master's degree.
My career trajectory involved several roles, each with a strong foundation in communication. I began as an assistant to a Broadway producer, transitioning to an associate producer at a media non-profit, then became an independent theatre producer. I eventually joined a theatre ticketing startup, starting as a manager and leaving as a Senior Director after 5.5 years. Currently, I work as the Strategic Program Manager for Creator Growth at Quora.
Each of these roles has underscored the importance of communication in diverse industries. My media and communications background has proven to be a valuable asset, with marketing, relationship building, research, and writing being core components in every role.
