Can an Orthodox Christian be a Fascist?

Well, as there actually are a lot of self-described fascists who are Orthodox Christians, I'd say 'definitely'.

Indeed, reactionary movements of the far right, whether they identify as fascist or just as 'extreme nationalist', in Eastern Europe and Greece are often very forceful in their identification with the Orthodox church.

Alignment with Orthodox Christian Teachings

No. Orthodox Christianity, which means being adherent to the universal, unaltered teachings of the Church, excludes any type of political or ideological affiliation. So if a person claims to share a certain political ideology, it already challenges their religious beliefs.

When it comes to fascism, this ideology emphasizes a certain strong identity that is NOT rooted in the beliefs of the Church, which denounces any national or ethnic identities and affiliations. Therefore, it not only challenges a person’s Orthodoxy but directly contradicts it. If you happen to meet a fascist who claims to be an Orthodox Christian, you're either dealing with an ignorant person or a liar. Let’s hope for the former, as some education might help.

Similarities and Differences Between Orthodoxy and Fascism

I think Orthodoxy shares slightly similar ideologies, but an Orthodox Christian, or any person practicing a faith-based religious belief, cannot 'be a fascist or a communist or a capitalist Republican and what not'. They are a Christian. It seems like a simple answer, but it is more a matter of precedent. When a person practices Orthodoxy or any other religion, the political systems have only a tangential effect on their actions.

Legionarism: A Subtype of Fascism in Eastern Europe

Legionarism, a subtype of fascism in Eastern Europe, was rural and lower class-based and very clerical. Italian fascism, on the other hand, was based on the urban middle class and was theoretically quite anticlerical. Therefore, you can't be a pure fascist and an Orthodox, but you can be a Legionarist and a devout Orthodox, like Codreanu in Romania.

Beyond Identity to Idolatry

Only by indulging in dvoeverie, double-mindedness, can one separate their religious identity from their political ideology. Orthodox Christians should seek to draw closer to God and become more godly. Fascism, on the other hand, seeks power for its own sake and is therefore considered idolatry. This fundamental difference underscores why the ideologies of these two movements are fundamentally at odds.
