As of August 2023, the London Underground has implemented Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) on two of its major lines: the Jubilee Line and the Northern Line. Jubilee Line and Northern Line

Extensive Implementation

As of September 2021, the following lines on the London Underground have been equipped with the latest CBTC technology:

Northern Line: The Northern Line has also been upgraded with CBTC, enabling automatic train operation and more frequent services. Victoria Line: As the first line to adopt CBTC, the Victoria Line offers automatic train operation and enhanced reliability. However, implementation has been progressive and may not be fully operational in all sections yet.

Current Progress

The Seltrac system, currently being installed by Thales on the 4LM upgrade project for the Metropolitan, District, Circle, and Hammersmith and City Lines, is a significant ongoing project. The Seltrac system is expected to be operational between Hammersmith and Great Portland Street, but the completion date, originally targeted for 2023, is looking increasingly optimistic due to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Differences in Technology

It's important to note that the CBTC technology implemented on the Jubilee and Northern Lines, while similar to that being installed on the 4LM upgrade, is actually Transmission-Based Train Control (TBTC). TBTC utilizes inductive loop cables mounted on the track between the running rails to facilitate data transmission between the train and the signalling infrastructure. In contrast, CBTC relies on radio communication between the trains and trackside radio antennae. This distinction highlights the differences in implementation and potential future upgrades for the London Underground network.
